Tunnel Glamping: Sunset from the shepherd's hut patio

General

  • Shepherd’s hut set in 15 acres edging the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • A 15-minute drive to the Brecon Beacons National Park; walks from site
  • Exclusive kitchen and bathroom adjacent; shops 10 minutes’ drive

Here’s a chance to get down with the sheep at Tunnel Glamping, where the cute and cosy Cwtch shepherd’s hut awaits in its own private paddock. It’s surrounded by fields full of sheep on a 15-acre former hill farm, and while dogs are very welcome, please keep them under tight control around the livestock.

This comfy little pod is toasty thanks to a woodburning stove – keep it that way with kindling available to buy from the farm for a small nightly charge. Powered by electricity, the simple accommodation includes a double bed and drop-down table, while a kitchenette with hob, grill and fridge is in the facilities shed just a short walk away, also offering a hot shower, basin and loo.

From the door of the hut, there are spectacular views across the valley towards the Brecon Beacons National Park, while from the side window you can see the stream forming the farm's boundary with Gethin Woods, a 2,000-acre forest that you are free to wander. On sunny days, enjoy those views from the splash pool in front of the hut.

Situated on the edge of the national park, the town of Aberdare (10 minutes’ drive) has a variety of shops and supermarkets, a covered market and a sprinkling of food outlets.

Loved the privacy and view’s especially of an evening, we stayed there over bonfire night and we could see the whole town’s fireworks it was beautiful.
The fence paddock that the hit was in was great for our dog and the extra facilities for use during summer looked fun too.

The hut itself was immaculate as with the kitchen and bathroom shed that was exclusive use for the hut.

    Disliked:

The only slight moan was the mattress was too big for the frame and would have been nice if the frame was made to fit the mattress.

Beautiful scenery, hut and facilities hut were lovely and clean. The hosts have thought about everything, cooking utensils, fridge, tv, barbecue, towels etc. The water feature in front of the hut was lovely and the gentle sound of water was so relaxing. We can't wait to do it again.

There is so much to do around the area, we couldn't fit everything in.

We loved everything from the welcome from hosts Richard and Sheila. Our Shepherds hut was too cute and very comfy and clean. Our shed a few steps away was a fab kitchen, diner and shower room also immaculate. We had everything there to be able to cook. I took a 3 day box from mindful chef and has no problem preparing our meals. Views were amazing. Walks wet just gorgeous too. So peaceful and a wonderful star filled night with no light pollution. Only a short drive from Cardiff we took the train/ bus as train line works but so organised it was great. We will be back for sure x

The shepherds hut is very clean and I was made to feel very welcome. The hut itself has bedding, towels and a dressing gown provided. I was worried I might be cold if not running the fire but there is a heater that more than kept me warm. The internet connection is good and fine for streaming a movie in the evening.

The facilities hut is well kitted out with combi microwave oven, a small fridge with a little freezer compartment, kettle and a single hob. Crockery and cutlery is all provided and they even have tea and coffee available. There was also cooking oil, salt and vinegar provided. If you don’t want to cook Deliveroo is also available. The shower was warm and perfect after a day out walking.

The site has beautiful views across the valley and easy access to several walks. The railway walk running past the bottom of the drive is great if you just want a fairly flat route that you can easily follow. There are no stiles on that route with access through gates so it’s ideal if you have a dog that doesn’t do stiles or if you just don’t like climbing over them yourself. The paddock around the hut is fenced but due to livestock in neighbouring fields you are asked to keep your dog on lead. Mine loved the splash pool. Parking is easy and the site was peaceful.

It is within easy distance of Pen-y-Fan and a drive up the heads of the valleys road is well worth it. There are several reservoirs with walking routes nearby if you want to branch further afield.

The staff on site are friendly and couldn’t help more. When I raised that the utilities hut was a bit cold a heater was added within half an hour.

All in all a wonderful experience.

    Disliked:

The bedding provided is white which with two dogs could have been a bit of a challenge to keep clean even though they are not allowed on the bed. Thankfully I brought spare bedding to put over the top which alleviated that worry.

It is a shame dogs must be kept on lead in the paddock. I understand the reasoning but it did make moving back and forth between the utilities hut and the living space a bit difficult especially if I was carrying a drink as I also had to hold two leads. It also made it difficult to sit outside as they would have to be tethered the entire time. It would be great to see it securely fenced, even if it’s a smaller area within the paddock between the two huts that would allow a bit more freedom.
