Lovely scenery!

  • Small-scale site on a Snowdonia smallholding close to the A470
  • A 20-minute drive to Blaenau Ffestiniog; half an hour to Snowdon
  • 20 minutes’ walk to the village pub and shop
With walks around local mountains and lakes or zipwires, subterranean trampolines and mountain biking a short drive away, Camp Stesion is an almost wild camping site which is never too far from outdoorsy activities… that’s very good news for the active sorts. Just as good news for scenery seekers is that this laidback site is in a splendid part of Snowdonia and part of a small smallholding where mornings are marked by mountain views, or perhaps an early start to make the most of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the Zip World Slate Caverns and Antur Stiniog’s mountain biking trails (which are all 20 minutes’ drive away) or to climb Mount Snowdon (you'll have choice of six paths up to the summit about half an hour's drive away). This is a small-scale campsite, so you get almost the same feeling as you would out in the wilds, just with the comforts of toilets, hot showers, an outdoor sink and drinking water. There’s no wifi here, but there's good 4G coverage across the spacious pitches (each of which is about 300 square metres). In addition, each pitch has a firepit. As this is a quiet area next to the village of Trawsfynydd, the peace is kept since loud music and motorhomes are not allowed. Easy to get about? Another tick in the box. The site is just off the A470 and there’s a biking centre just 10 minutes’ drive away. Trawsfynydd is accessible on foot (20 minutes’ walk) – there you’ll be able to grab basic supplies in the village shop or cosy in for a meal in the local pub. For cooking on site, there's a shared campers' kitchen for all guests including utensils pots, pans and tea and coffee. Group bookings are not permitted; the site only accepts bookings from solo campers, couples and families.

Squirrel camping pod

Liked: The setting and view are breathtaking, serene, quiet and peaceful. Close enough to local villages and Porthmadog to not feel isolated, but far enough to feel hidden and secret. Lovely accommodation, surprisingly warm in the night when temperatures got as low as 7 degrees. Flexible with check in times for our convenience. Reasonably priced. Great private space with firepit etc.

Bee camping pod

Liked: Peaceful with amazing fews. Small and quiet campsite. We had a pod which was comfortable and clean. The showers were hot and powerful. Even though we had taken our own camping kitchen utilities you don't need any the campsite kitchen has everything you need to make your own food. Warm welcome from the owners. Good location to visit many parts of North Wales. Thoroughly recommend.

Disliked: Nothing.

Fox Den cabin

Liked: Everything at Camp Stesion was perfect, spotlessly cleaned and well equipped campers kitchen. The showers and toilet was also spotless. The shower was good with lovely hot water and good pressure to. The foxden we stayed in was cosy clean and warm right next to our firepit with a massive area for your own personal space.

Disliked: My only dislike was the mattress on the bed, but that's at lot down to being 6ft man sleeping on a child's bed.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Everything about the campsite! The campsite had beautiful views and was lovely and peaceful. We loved that each pitch had plenty of space with a campfire and a bench to sit on. The toilets bathroom were great and the kitchen area was very thoughtful, with plenty of things to be able to cook your own meal and not need to bring anything! The owners were also lovely, checking in with us to make sure we were happy and had everything we needed.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Lovely small campsite with very spacious pitches Each pitch had own picnic table and campfire Very friendly site manager who responded very quickly when had an issue with a camper playing music late at night (it's a no music site) and got the problem sorted straight away. Thank you :)

Disliked: There's two showers in site but unfortunately only one was working with hot water. The facilities are lovely, clean and well looked after, but there's only one sink for the whole site which is in the bathroom with the loos. It would be great if there were a couple of seperate sinks in the shower room area so you could brush your teeth away from the loos :) You can hear the traffic from the road, but it does quieten down at night and you do get used to it

From the manager: Thank you for leaving a review! We were not aware of the shower not working, a quick text would of solved the problem. It has now been fixed. We only have one sink in the bathroom because we only have a maximum of 18 people on site when the camp is full, compared to other campsites who have around 400 people plus and only 4 - 5 sinks. Thank you for bringing the issue to our attention we are always trying to improve the camp and it might be an idea for the future.

Local attractions

Kicking off your getaway with some action won’t be a problem. Take a 35-minute walk to Llyn Trawsfynydd and you could be hiking, cycling or fishing. Up for a drive instead? Tear up the mountain biking trails of Coed-y-Brenin (15 minutes’ drive) and the downhill runs at Antur Stiniog (20 minutes). Zip World Slate Caverns (20 minutes) has zipwires and underground trampolines for bounces beneath the slate. A little history for you too? Blaenau Ffestiniog (20 minutes) is a historic mining town with plenty of that to explore, or you could tackle the Precipice Walk (20 minutes), a scenic trail that traces the route of an old tramway. There’s really plenty of variety around here to keep everyone busy, from the Pistyll y Cain (20 minutes) waterfall to Barmouth’s seaside amusements and many outdoor activities (35 minutes).
