The grass pitches

  • Small family site five minutes’ drive from Aberdaron and its beach
  • On the Llŷn Peninsula, 15 minutes’ drive from Porthor beach
  • Working farm a couple of minutes’ walk from the Wales Coast Path
Are you getting away to the Llŷn Peninsula, Wales’ pretty National Landscape scattered with sandy beaches and small coastal villages where seals and dolphins can often be spotted not too far from shore? Well, good news, because Solfach is handily based just a five-minute drive from one of its most popular seaside villages, Aberdaron. The village's mile-long sandy beach, backed by green fields and buildings that include two pubs, a shop, a bakery and cafés, is conveniently close. In fact, you could walk there in about 20 minutes along the Wales Coast Path, which is just a couple of minutes’ stroll from your base. It's just one of the excellent local walks that await you in this gorgeous part of the world. As a small one-acre family site on a working farm, this is a properly rural setting. Still, facilities are nicely done; there’s a toilet block with proper flushing loos, a shower and an indoor washing-up sink. Your dogs are welcome to come along here, as long as you take care to keep them on a lead at all times (this is a farm, after all). Staying here places you within 15 minutes' drive of the whistling sands of Porthor and nice and close to Bardsey Island. Ferries leave from Porth Meudwy, five minutes’ drive away, to see its remote banks. Bring your binoculars to try and spy some of the many migratory birds that drift in and out of the area in spring and autumn, as well as the grey seals living along its rocky shores. Dolphins are also fond of the area.

Local attractions

The Llŷn Peninsula is known for its sandy beaches, so it's only natural that you’d want to see as many as possible. Aberdaron beach (20 minutes’ walk) is the closest spot, a mile along, with rockpools that appear at low tide. Porthor (15 minutes’ drive), owned by the National Trust, is famed for its ‘whistling sands’; walk barefoot along the sand and listen out to see why. Porth Neigwl (35 minutes) is another stunning spot with four miles' worth of sand to walk on. Surfers tend to like this spot for its fairly consistent southwest swells, so do pack your board and booties too. A beach picnic will, of course, require some supplies. Plenty of local produce can be sourced in Pwllheli (40 minutes), a market town where one of North Wales’ largest outdoor street markets pops up every Wednesday. Its marina is host to lively watersports events throughout the year, and it even has two beaches of its own, one of which has views of distant peaks in Eryri (Snowdonia National Park).
