The river wnion

  • Peaceful and laidback no-frills site in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • Dolgellau 10 minutes' drive; 15 minutes to the coast or Cadair Idris
  • On the banks of the Wnion river for fishing and wild swimming
‘Don’t expect a swimming pool, a bar or a shop’ say the owners of Dolgamedd Caravan and Camping Park – this laidback Gwynedd site is a place that's all about the joy of no-frills stays, embracing the natural setting and soaking up the peace of its fabulous Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park location. Indeed there may be no pool, but this laidback family-run site has something that's arguably just as enticing, as it's on the banks of the Wnion river, with direct access to the river for fishing, paddles and swims if you like (chillier than a pool, perhaps, but still a whole lot of fun…) Guests have been coming here for many years, with several of them returning time and again for repeated doses of the peaceful atmosphere on site and the plethora of outdoor activities available in the local area. Dolgellau (10 minutes' drive) is a well-known hub for walkers and hikers, and there are plenty of options nearby for mountain bikers and climbers too. Getting out and about should be fairly straightforward, as the site is only a little way off the A494 and has a bus stop almost outside. The evening activity of choice on site is usually a quiet glass of wine and a barbecue or campfire by the river – and to keep that peaceful vibe going there's a no-music policy here, and a general request to preserve the peace (party types and large groups will need to look elsewhere for their accommodation). Although this site is no-frills in style, it does have a good collection of essential facilities for its guests – these include toilets, showers, wifi, a launderette, a shared fridge and freezer, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

Peaceful, well-run site with lovely riverside spots. Praised for cleanliness & friendly staff. Good facilities, campers' kitchen. Near shops & walks. Road noise & weak Wi-Fi noted, but many loved the quiet, scenic spot for a relaxing break.

Powered grass tent or campervan site (riverside)

Liked Really easy to find our pitch on arrival, and it was juts as described. Facilities all clean and easy walk. Close to Dolgellau for small shops, pubs for meals etc. Lots of trails locally. Also not far from Fairbourne for an evening stroll on the beach.

Disliked The electric hook up needed a very long lead which we didn’t have long enough for so we were without electric. Could have done with telling us the length needed for our pitch.

Middle field unpowered grass site

Liked Location

Disliked 90% of the campsite were permanent caravans. A well as the caravan and awning, they had gardens, garden sheds, gazebo's, garden ornaments, lights. It was far from the back to basics quiet site advertised. It was like home from home with lawnmowers and strimmers being used late into the evening, far from peaceful.
It said no campfires unless you were by the river, and dogs on a lead, which we were happy with, however, this didn't seem to apply to the permanents who had campfires and dogs roaming free. Very disappointed with the whole look of the site. Also there was a very long notice explaining all the different recycling but, the majority of people were just throwing all rubbish in the same green wheelie bin!
Bethan was however very understanding and helped resolve the situation, and listened to our complaint professionally, so thank you Bethan.

Powered grass tent or campervan site (riverside)

Liked Camp site was clean, basic and peaceful
Stayed on a pitch near the riverbank
Arrived and realised our electric hook lead was too short!
Lady in reception kindly gave us an extension to use during our stay.
Facilities were clean and well kept
If you arrive out of hours there is a board to notify you of your pitch number and contact number if you have any problems.
WIFI available in the campers kitchen!
Absolutely stunning part of wales, Lake Bala roughly 20mins down the road
It’s quite a small site, so wherever you pitch your not far from facilities
Would 100% visit again

Local attractions

This area is home to some of the most popular walking trails in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park, including the Torrent Walk and Precipice Walk (both trailheads are within 10 minutes' drive). Those of a more ambitious nature may like to tackle the Minffordd Path up Cadair Idris (15 minutes away) or the mountain bike paths at Coed-y-Brenin (20 minutes) while families and leisure cyclists try the riverside Mawddach Trail (10 minutes). Up the thrill levels again with an activity at the National White Water Centre (half an hour) or one of the adventures on offer at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes). All a bit too hair-raising? Opt instead to visit the Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour) or take a stroll around the colourful village of Portmeirion (40 minutes). Taking to the coast is always an option, too – perhaps for some bird spotting at RSPB Mawddach Valley (10 minutes), some history at Harlech Castle (45 minutes) or a day on the beach at Barmouth (25 minutes).
