  • Quiet five-acre site for adults only with sea and mountain views
  • A five-minute drive to the beach; 35 minutes to the Llŷn Peninsula
  • Nearly-wild site with firepits and wood available for a fee
Go nearly wild at Ysgubor Wen Eco Camping, set in the open North Wales countryside. With tents-only pitches and only adults invited, you’ll be in for a quiet, relaxing stay down a country lane and a mile away from any main roads. Each private pitch is in its own separate plot, surrounded by either long meadow grasses and wildflowers or tucked into the trees. Made up of a mixture of meadows and a small managed woodland, this remote five-acre site was created nearly 30 years ago as a private nature reserve. Naturally, it’s become a haven for wildlife because conservation has been the focus. Plus, there’s limited light pollution, just what you need for the big starry night skies that frequent this area, 15 minutes’ drive from the edge of the Snowdonia National Park. Get yourself into a prime position for stargazing around a firepit. They’re available along with wood for a small fee (and subject to availability), but feel free to bring your own wood. The other facilities at your disposal are two composting toilets with sinks and a washing-up area. The scenery is rather splendid here. There are views of the national park and Snowdon mountain from the site. Spy on the sea and the countryside too; the nearest beach is just five minutes’ drive away in case you were wondering. Bird or wildlife watching is great too. The site operates a no-car policy, so after parking up at the entrance, shift your camping gear using the available wheelbarrows and get settled in with your dog (well-behaved canines on a lead are welcome).

Bwlch Mawr unpowered grass tent site (woodland)

Liked: Perfection for a wild camping experience. We loved that the pitches are all scattered, you are barely aware that anyone else is camping here! We would definitely recommend the woodland pitches which are beautifully private. Meticulously clean compost loos that feel comfortable and enjoyable to use as well as a clean, basic sink area. Bring your walking boots incase it rains, well as head torches. Very limited WiFi signal on site which added to the feel of getting away from it all (though EE was useable for WhatsApp messages). Communication with Jane and Mike was fab, they were accommodating and ensured we had all the information for a great stay. We’ll be back again next year - plenty more lakes to discover and swim in!

Ffynnon unpowered grass tent site

Liked: What a fantastic, beautiful and peaceful site. My camping pitch was tucked away in a corner with fantastic views - quiet and peaceful, except for the relaxing sounds of the nearby wildlife. The toilets were spotlessly clean. The owners were lovely and welcoming. I wish I could have stayed a few more days and I look forward to returning. Thank you.

Disliked: Everything was perfect.

Ffynnon unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Absolutely superb site. We've been camping for many years and this is exactly what we've been looking for. The location is excellent; feels so remote but so close to all amenities. It's completely peaceful with a wealth of birdlife around. The pitches are really well separated, and we felt like we were the only ones there most of the time. It is an eco site with dry compost toilets and no rubbish bins. This suits us perfectly but may put others off if not used to this. We loved the simplicity of the site, a complete break from the hubbub of usual daily life. The site is beautifully kept with spotless loos and sinks. Fires are available with wood obtainable on the site. The views are incredible, and there's a lovely walk from the site to the local coastline. Aberdesach is great for a beach stroll and only about 15 minute walk away. There's also a lovely circular 4 mile walk from the site. It's close to so much - Snowdonia National Park, Caernarfon, Anglesey, a wealth of castles and both Cadw and National Trust sites. But as it's so peaceful you can choose to just lap this up amid great views on the site. I can't recommend this site enough for anyone that loves the peace and tranquility of (almost) wild camping.

From the manager: Thank you Catherine for your wonderful review! We are delighted to hear that you had a good experience here. We try hard to provide a natural experience of wildlife, without the usual campsite feel. We hope you can come back next year! 😀

Liked: Quiet, wild experience with mountain views. Adult only with minimal pitches. At one point there were 7 vehicles in the car park area, but I could only see 3 tents when walking around, it's a fantastic campsite!

From the manager: Thank you Peter, it's wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Yes, the mystery of the hidden tents 😂, we have purposefully designed the pitches for seclusion, it surprises us too sometimes. We hope to see you back again next year!

Liked: Beautiful views from the campsite, not far from the beach and really helpful campsite owners. It was also lovely and quiet even on a bank holiday, as the individual pitches were well spaced and it's adult only!

Bwlch Mawr unpowered grass tent site (woodland)

Liked: Wonderful site, exactly what I was looking for. Great location. Jane and Mike were great hosts who offered up plenty of suggestions on places to visit. Next to no phone signal which was definitely a bonus. The sky of a nighttime was an absolute dream, I was lucky enough to visit on a night with a clear sky full of stars.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: It was a real joy to camp at Ysgubor Wen Eco Camping. The location is wonderful and offers a perfect setting for an escape from today's busy life. Our particular pitch was hidden in the trees and flanked on one side by a stone wall with a field of grazing cattle on the other side and the Eifl mountain range in the background. The location was the perfect place to take advantage of both mountain and coastal walks and we will definitely be going again. We're hoping for sunny weather next time to see the place in a different light, however the strong winds and rain that we experienced during our stay certainly added to the dramatic atmosphere provided by the scenery. Well done Ysgubor Wen!
