  • Around half an hour by train from Chester and Llandudno
  • In Prestatyn, a five-minute walk from the town’s train station
If you’re roaming north Wales in your rolling home, bag a secure spot at Ty Morol Motorhome and Campervan Site, set in a residential part of Prestatyn and a 10-minute walk from Barkby beach in this Denbighshire town. This privately owned park in a gated residential garden has a no-frills feel, with facilities for the grass pitches stretching simply to water and waste disposal, but is very well located for ditching the motorhome or camper safely and roving around north Wales via public transport. It’s just over a five-minute walk from Prestatyn’s train station, with shops, pubs, restaurants and takeaways enroute for sorting the essentials (top tip: grab some meat for the barbie as cooking over coals is permitted back at the site). A retail park with supermarkets and high street names is also a 10-minute walk away if you fancy some more browsing. As well as being handily located, this park welcomes all sorts of guests – from families and motorcyclists to dogs – and has free wifi to help keep you connected with the outside world (fab for using mapping apps to figure out the way to tomorrow’s destination of choice). And what might tomorrow’s destination be…? Well, the beaches of Rhyl (10 minutes) and the mountains of Snowdonia National Park (50 minutes) are within driving distance, so you might have some decisions to make.

Local attractions

Thinking of getting some hiking under your belt while in north Wales? Set off for Snowdonia National Park (50 minutes’ drive) to clamber across the peaks, perhaps up to Wales' highest point, which is known as 'Yr Wyddfa' in the local lingo. Not sure your legs can take it? A train’s also on hand to whisk you to the top. You could embrace adventure at the activity centres in the area too – there’s a motorised surfing lake (45 minutes), a series of trampolines set underground in a cavern (an hour and 10 minutes) and ziplines over an old slate quarry (50 minutes) to select from. Over in England, Chester’s a choice spot for visits to one of Britain’s best zoos or roaming around Roman ruins (40 minutes’ drive or half an hour by train); the Victorian houses and pier of Llandudno, meanwhile, are the same distance in the opposite direction if you’d rather sample what Wales has to offer. Further on from here are Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty to cast your eye on, including the stunning isle of Anglesey (an hour) and the equally gorgeous Llŷn Peninsula (an hour and a half).
