  • Relaxed glamping site just outside Snowdonia National Park
  • A 15-minute drive to Lake Bala; 25 minutes to Betws-y-Coed
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; easy access from the A5
Pair the chilled-out countryside with the adrenaline of zipwires, whitewater rafting and other assorted watersports by staying at Glampio Ty Cerrig Glamping, in the small village of Llangwm. With easy access to the A5 and half an hour’s drive from the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Llangollen, this family-friendly site is a fine pick whether you're after the slow-paced life of the North Wales countryside or something more action-packed. Settle in here for a sweet retreat after a day spent scaling summits in Snowdonia National Park (10 minutes’ drive away), hunting down nearby waterfalls, or canoeing, sailing or fishing your way around local lakes (including Lake Bala, 15 minutes away). A peaceful spot with splendid views, this glamping village has shared shower and toilet facilities along with spaces for a barbecue or campfire to finish off your day. With the local town of Cerrigydrudion five minutes’ drive away, you won’t have to search far and wide for a chilled glass of wine or local beer. There are several pubs within five minutes’ drive and a small shop to help you create a stash of energy-boosting snacks. You'll certainly need them, as it's a 15-minute drive to a whitewater rafting centre (the rapids are well-known in this area), where you can also choose to get stuck into canyoning.

Liked: We loved our stay! The bell tent was amazing really lovely decorated, loads of equipment available! Beautiful views, it was amazing to wake up and see the hills in a morning! We will recommend to anyone, maybe even return again! Only thing we would say is there isn’t anywhere to cook under shelter when it rains, twice we got caught out and the rain put a stop to us cooking, there is a parasol but in the wind meant we couldn’t use it!

Liked: Gorgeous views, really quiet site with lots of nature around. The site was very clean and the staff were very friendly. We also loved we had a fire pit as a lot of sites now do not allow this. There is only one charging point in the ladies toilets which some may find difficult but we didn’t mind and took this as an opportunity to be off our tech.

Local attractions

With three lakes of varying sizes in the area, you can test out your fishing, sailing and canoeing skills at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes' drive), which also has an osprey exhibition, playground and mountain bike hire. The smaller reservoir at Llyn Alwen (15 minutes) has a seven-mile trail for walks or bikes, while the biggest of them all, Llyn Tegid (20 minutes), is nicely explored by canoe, dinghy or narrow-gauge railway. A steam railway also chugs through Llangollen (half an hour), a wise stop for the UNESCO World Heritage Site canals, riverside picnics or a hike to the Horseshoe Falls (25 minutes). In Betws-y-Coed (25 minutes), head to Zip World Fforest (20 minutes) for treetop nets, mind-boggling zipwires and a treetop rollercoaster. If you want to keep the adrenaline pumping, the whole family can whizz around at the same time on the four-person zipwire at Zip World Slate Caverns (35 minutes), followed by a bounce on their underground trampolines. Perhaps you could also try surfing (or unwind at the spa) at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (40 minutes). Elsewhere, Moel Famau (40 minutes) has more mountainous walks. Alternatively, opt for a lighter stroll around the level-grounded Bodnant Garden (40 minutes), a National Trust site with a very pleasant garden.
