  • Dog-friendly Mid Wales site in an off-grid 30-acre ancient woodland
  • Within walking distance of the Offa’s Dyke Path and Glyndŵr's Way
  • Hire a firepit on site; pub serving cask ales and food nearby
Roll up ready, sling your luggage over your shoulder and hop over the gate to pick your preferred plot in the 30-acre oak woodlands at Redwood Heyope… surrounded by the ancient trunks and the Heyope valley, this dog-friendly site will surround you with nature and take you off the grid in Powys in Mid Wales, just outside the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 10 minutes' drive across the border with England. You’ll be given a map to sketch out your way around the site's woodlands, so you can wander around the site or forge your way into Heyope and its little church and brook. For walking routes that will take you further out, the Offa’s Dyke Path (under 10 minutes’ drive away) and Glyndŵr's way (five minutes’ drive away) are both within walking distance of the site for routes through the Welsh countryside. Hire a firepit on site for a chilled-out end to the day. And when you’re ready to eat out, there’s a pub three minutes’ drive away which serves homecooked food and cask ales. Meanwhile over in Knighton (10 minutes’ drive), there’s a food shop and a selection of restaurants, cafés and pubs where you may want to browse more menus. While the site is off-grid, 4G available in some spots. Other facilities around the site include a composting toilet and water provided for washing. If you’ve brought along a four wheel drive you can park up in the designated parking area; if you’ve got a standard car, there’s space at the bottom of the track.

Local attractions

Celebrate everything literary and try your hands at pottery in Hay-on-Wye (45 minutes’ drive). Then turn from the literary world and into older times at the Croft Castle and Parkland (35 minutes), a National Trust site with 1500 acres of parks and woodlands and spaces for children to build dens or create wild art. Hike or bike around the reservoir at Elan Valley (45 minutes), where there are challenging courses over waterways and rocky hills and activities for children such as high ropes courses and bug-hunting. If the whole family is in tow, Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (half an hour) is a good stop too, as it's home to an owl centre and small farm animals that kids can feed. If you’re down for a day trip, the seaside could also be on the cards. Borth beach (an hour and 40 minutes) has a four-mile stretch of sand and sea fit for windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing, while Aberystwyth (an hour and 35 minutes) has a cliff railway, sandy beach and the Vale of Rheidol Railway through the wooded hillsides.
