  • Peaceful, simple site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye; canoe hire five minute away
  • Dog-friendly and within walking distance of two local pubs
Rural, you say? Why yes indeed – it’s a fitting term indeed for Pentwyn Dingle Rural Campsite, a peaceful Powys site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and at the foot of the Black Mountains. There’s a properly middle-of-the-countryside feel here, with trees all around and a brook running through the site, but it’s also in a handy spot a mere 10 minutes’ drive from Hay-on-Wye. As you may guess, this is a fab location for folk looking to check out the stunning scenery nearby: there are plenty of walking and bike routes to follow locally, and the owners also recommend days of canoeing on the River Wye and horse riding in the Black Mountains. Fancy mixing that up with a bit of town time? Brecon, Crickhowell and Talgarth are all nearby, and of course there’s some excellent pottering to be done in the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye. Back at base, facilities have been kept very minimal – just a drinking water tap and chemical waste disposal point (you’ll need to bring toilet facilities with you, and you’re kindly asked to take all rubbish away with you). Keeping things simple means more space to focus on the fresh air and enjoy a bit of birdsong. Being a laidback kind of place, dogs are welcome to join you – they’ll probably enjoy a paddle in the brook, as indeed you might at the end of a long walk. Campfires and barbecues are permitted if you’d like an alfresco meal, or you can stroll over to one of two local pubs within a mile of the site.

Power optional grass site

Liked Beautiful remote scenery next to a chuckling river, several areas to park, the choice is yours. Martin the custodian will visit to collect the balance of booking fee via Pitchup. He even gave me a lift to the local pub, one of two about a mile away. No facilities other than fresh water and chemical disposal. If you aren't fussy about facilities or nearby entertainment this is ideal.

Liked Tranquil and pretty site. The scope to choose where you like is great...sound of the trees and babbling stream make it quite magical. I came to relax and switch off which it certainly provided.

Power optional grass site

Liked This was my 2nd time staying at Pentwyn Dingle this year. It's an idyllic spot, well away from main roads. Perfect for walking, relaxing & star gazing. The babbling brook that runs through the site is great for humans & dogs to paddle in. You can choose your own pitch & there are drinking water taps & an Elsan disposal point.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Fabulous little spot.

Power optional grass site

Liked Absolutely love this place. A little gem.
Babbling brook, birds and buttercups.
The owner was also absolutely lovely.
A very relaxing two nights. Will definitely be back.

Disliked The fairly long walk to get water if camped down by the woods but it’s a tiny factor and no big deal.

Power optional grass site

Liked Peaceful spot surrounded by nature, with just the sounds of the babbling brook and songbirds. We were lucky on a midweek day in May to have it practically to ourselves and enjoyed a lovely evening walk nearby. Martin was very friendly and helpful. Thanks for a magical stay.

Disliked Theres very poor phone signal and no wifi - which really adds to the charm of the place.

Will recommend this site to any & all

Local attractions

The walking possibilities around here are many and varied, ranging from gentle circular walks that stop at the pub for all-important rehydration to uphill clambers at Pen y Fan – the highest peak in south Wales is about a 40-minute drive from the site. If you fancy a different way to get out and about, check out the local canoe hire place and the activity centre that’s got options for caving, rafting, paddleboarding and other outdoor antics – both places are about five minutes’ drive away. Llangorse Lake (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine pick for a day out whether you’re after walks or watersports. Time for something less energetic? Perhaps head to Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes) to see the castle and poke your nose into all the bookshops, or make a break for Brecon (20 minutes) for a march around the regimental museum. Also within a half-hour drive are pretty Crickhowell and the flower-flanked pathways of Brobury House Gardens.
