  • Discrete Dyfi Valley wild camping site in 30 acres of working woodland
  • A 20-minute drive from Tywyn beach and Penygader
  • Multiple firepit areas and a four-wheel drive shuttle available
Wild stays await at this 30-acre working woodland in the Dyfi Valley, accessible by four-wheel drive only. The entrance to the dog-friendly Coed Esgair Las Blue Ridge Woods Wildcamp is a 600-foot climb up a shale track, so the wild camping site is attractively discrete. Don’t fret if you don’t have your own four-wheel drive, as those without can book the site’s four-wheel drive shuttle service for their arrival and departure (although this isn’t a requirement for staying here). You’ll need to be fully self-sufficient at this wild-style woodland destination– that’s the fun of it – as the site has no water or showers and only a discrete composting toilet. Instead, you’ll be practising your campfire cooking skills and bushcraft across the site’s multiple firepit and seating areas or unwinding in a hammock strung between the trees. The sheltered woodland pitches may feel very remote (what a dream for relaxing breaks), but in reality, they’re only a few miles from the amenities in Machynlleth. Five minutes’ drive away, the market town has plenty of shops… and pubs, if you fancy it. If you’d like to see a little of the sand and sea, the nearest beach is only 20 minutes’ drive away in Tywyn, and popular for surfing, jetskiing or other watersports. With Penygader 20 minutes’ drive away for a mountain hike and the Dyfi Bike Park 10 minutes’ drive away for those who like to tear up a few mountain biking trails, there’s plenty of scope for outdoorsy breaks with a few historical locations mixed in there. Ask the site to point you in the direction of local four-wheel drive tracks and climbing too.

Local attractions

You may very well see some gorgeous birds gliding into your woodland base in the Dyfi Valley, but with the Dyfi Osprey Project (10 minutes’ drive) so close by, you’ll have even more to rave about. If it’s beaches and watersports that are high on your priorities, map out the way to coastal spots such as Aberystwyth (35 minutes), Ynyslas beach (half an hour) or Borth beach (half an hour). Further north into the Snowdonia National Park, and past Penygader, Coed y Brenin Forest Park (40 minutes), mountain biking trails, cycling trails and hiking trails criss-cross between the trees for more active days out. As for local historical sights, simply beeline for the castle ruins at Castell y Bere (half an hour) or pretend like you’re back in the 19th century on a steam train trip into the Dulas Valley from the Corris Steam Railway Museum and Railway (15 minutes).
