  • Quiet site with river, meadow and woodland views
  • Within 40 minutes' drive of outdoor activities in the Elan valley
  • Over a mile of private fishing for trout, salmon, sewin and grayling
Fishing fan? As the name suggests, Irfon River Caravan and Camping Park is right on the banks of the River Irfon, and stays on this family-friendly site in mid Wales come with access to a mile and a quarter of private fishing rights. Trout, salmon, sewin and grayling are splashing in these waters, while there are further rich pickings on the nearby Usk and Wye rivers and in the reservoirs of the Elan Valley, a 40-minute drive away. It’s a pretty spot to park up in, with views of the river, meadows and woodlands, the Epynt mountains and the Brecon Beacons beyond. Despite its deep country setting, the site is under five minutes’ drive from the village and railway station of Garth and 10 minutes from Builth Wells, whose showground hosts the annual Royal Welsh Show and something crowd pulling pretty much every other weekend of the year as well. If you’ve been fortunate fishing the Irfon, caught some whoppers on the Wye or landed unbelievable quantities on the Usk, an outdoor feast awaits, and barbecues are welcome on site.

Local attractions

The Elan valley – an area of hills, rivers and lakes known as the Welsh Lake District – is half an hour’s drive away for hikes and angling, mountain biking and birdwatching. For further action on the feathered front, it’s a similar distance to the Red Kite Feeding Station just outside Rhayader, where an array of raptors lay on daily displays for their dinner. For a quick intro to the Brecon Beacons, make for the Pwll y Wrach National Nature Reserve, 40 minutes away: trails take you through ancient woodlands, looking out for badgers, otters, chiffchaffs and pied flycatchers before finishing with a deep, dark, thundering waterfall whose Welsh name means ‘the witches’ pool’. If you’re after bigger hikes high up, trails up Epynt mountain start five minutes’ drive away, and it’s around 50 minutes to routes up Pen y Fan and Waun Fach. Alternatively, let the water do all the hard work: canoe down the Wye from Three Cocks or down the Usk from Talybont, half an hour and 40 minutes away. If more into reading than boating, make a 40-minute foray to Hay-on-Wye, a town almost collapsing under the weight of all its secondhand bookshops, with many cosy pubs for you to peruse your purchases in over a pint.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Beautiful, peaceful location. There's a small river next to the campsite – ideal for hot summer days, or quick post-run or post-cycle ice-baths (:
Very friendly staff, clean toilets, easy to find. They even had wifi. Would recommend.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Excellent getaway-from-it-all country site on the edge of the beautiful Brecon Beacons. Stunning site, fully serviced hard standing pitch overlooking river… 20 mins drive for fuel & supplies so we arrived prepared. Friendly and helpful staff and shower block well maintained. Incredible wildlife seen during our stay including squirrels, rabbits, owls, buzzards, red kites, robins, chaffinches, blue tits, nuthatches, tree creepers, dippers, sand martins (to name a few)!.. great base for river fishing. A tranquil site we intend to return to for a longer stay! 👍

Disliked: No dislikes although a few basic supplies in a shop on site would be a welcomed addition. No TV reception but that’s fine with us as this is a place to step away from routine and breath in the fresh country air (strong wi-fi if you need to stay connected)!

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: The site itself is fine, probably just not for us. Overlooks a bend on the Irfon river - ideal for fishing. Site well maintained, although a bit water-logged.

Disliked: Unless you enjoy fishing, there is not much else on for families - although there is a very small playground hidden away.
There doesn't seem to be many local footpaths, so walks are on the roads which is less than ideal.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Great little touring area, the site is clean and tidy. The individual wet rooms and toilet facilities were spotless and of an excellent standard, the underfloor heating was a bonus and I actually felt like you could shower and get dry properly unlike most pokey shower cubical son campsites. Location is perfect to visit nearby towns and lots of nice walks. The river on the site is lovely. Lin and her sister are great, texted before arriving and met us at the gate and came up to our pitch to make sure everything was ok, that was at 7.30pm! Will be returning for sure, we love to stay at 5 star small sites and this one ticked all the boxes.

Disliked: Nothing - everything was great
