  • Small family-run farm in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Miles of hill, countryside and mountain walks all around
  • Just outside the village of Felindre
Newcourt Farm Campsite is a small family-run farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Brecon Beacons National Park and used by wise wayfarers as a base for hiking the hills, mountains and countryside all around. Gliding, horse riding, fishing, golf and watersports are all easily accessible from this handy base. However, if you’re too puffed out to even think about any of that, it is a stellar spot for stargazing or unwinding too. The farm has clean showers, toilets and a washing-up area. Supervised school trips and groups such as Duke of Edinburgh Award seekers are welcome, and the site is dog-friendly.

Liked: The toilet block was nice, unlike the portable toilets in the field, reception shed was cute and the man there was nice. Field was a bit lopsided so bare that in mind when pitching. Nice location we would stay here again

Disliked: Portable toilets were disgusting, smelt horrible even just walking past them

Liked: We basically had the field to ourselves which was nice. The views was amazing night and day and would defo camp here again. Friendly and helpful couple.

Disliked: Shower blocks were abit rough but visibly the couple were trying hard to keep it clean, apart from that we would recommend it.

Liked: Great location and good choice of pitches.

Disliked: The facilities are a bit rough and ready, however this is reflected in the very reasonable price.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Friendly host and wonderful quiet campsite with stunning views. Easy 4 mile walk into Hay-on-Wye. Showers are 50p but that gets you plenty of time and hot water!

Disliked: Facilities are a little outdated but do the job. Campsite on uneven/slopes ground so keep that in mind when preparing for your stay.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: A no-nonsense site (all waste to be taken home, but dog-mess containers dotted around!) - so please do not book in if you are expecting anything other than: freedom to pitch (it was not crowded when I was there), a slope which means everybody stands a chance of seeing the stunning views across the valley), and yes, amazing views and a massive range of imposing hills to walk and explore behind you. There are water taps, washing facilities, toilets and showers (50p), porta-loos for those who want to be as far away from others - i.e. they are positioned half way to the shower/toilet block. While the site is tucked away, the next Co-op is c 4miles in Talgarth or c5miles the other way in Hay-on-Wye - both within easy cycle range and on the flat, so bring a bike and leave the car on the hard-core stand. The site accommodates D of E groups. They are in their own part of the site, and given that around where I live kids have stopped playing outside and stay indoors on their gadgets, there cannot be enough places that ensure young people get to engage with the countryside and hopefully learn to love and respect it. One more thing: if you plan to go there by car, practise reversing your car. It is part of knowing how to drive, and the narrow lanes require you to be able to reverse at times.

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

Your boots will be made for walking: this corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park has footpaths and trails all around to warm you up before tackling the hill walks and mountains, and all in a spectacular part of Wales made up of valleys, waterfalls, caves and open countryside. There are a couple of walks direct from Newcourt and two long-distance trails cross through the farm: the Offa’s Dyke Path on the eastern border of the national park and the Taff Trail running south from Brecon. The Brecon Beacons Park Society has a full programme of guided walks in the park from moderate to strenuous, and there are lots of routes and maps available from the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority (or just ask Newcourt Farm owner David to point you in the right direction). The national park’s also where you can get your fill of climbing, birdwatching, caving, canoeing, sailing and other outdoor options; a visitor centre six miles from Brecon has all the info you might need as well as courses and events like pottery workshops and navigation training. Also around are several Sustrans routes for cyclists as well cycle hire and cycle tour guide companies; mountain bikers have five mountain bike centres and 14 trails from yellow (level one) to ‘killer black’ (bring plasters). Wheels on tour can cycle the Lôn Las Cymru, the route from Cardiff to Holyhead via Brecon (use route 42). After all that, you hereby have permission to curl up with a book: buy your tomes at the town of books, Hay-on-Wye, about half an hour from Brecon.
