  • Rural part-wooded Ceredigion site with a river alongside
  • New Quay, Aberporth and Tresaith beaches within a half-hour drive
  • Go walking with therapy goats or spend time with them on site
If ever there was a phrase to bring joy to the heart of someone seeking a rural holiday, it’s surely ‘therapy goats’. And indeed that’s what you’ll find at Ceredigion's Rainbow Therapy Goats Campsite, in a splendidly quiet spot in the hamlet of Cwrt-newydd. The goats here are particularly friendly and well trained ones that love to spend time with the site’s guests. You can book sessions to take them down to the seaside for an hour (with the owner alongside to give you hints on goat-handling) or simply spend time chilling out with them on site – either way, it’s bound to be a most relaxing and memorable way to make the most of your rural break. If you can drag yourselves away from such joys, there’s a lot more to explore in this area – including the coastline. It’s about a half-hour drive from here to the Ceredigion coastline, for days on the beaches of Aberporth, Tresaith and Gwbert, crabbing in Aberaeron or wildlife-spotting boat trips from New Quay. Spending some time on site is recommended, too – the place is partly covered in woods with a river running alongside the pitches. There’s a firepit with free logs provided, and a small shop which will bring your items to you. Facilities include a basic kitchen (with a kettle and washing-up sink), a unisex electric shower and separate male and female eco toilets. As this is a farm site it can get muddy around the place so the owners recommend bringing your wellies along.

Local attractions

Leave the goats to their own devices for a while and head out to explore the gorgeous Ceredigion coastline. For family swims and paddles, head to Aberporth (half an hour’s drive), which is lifeguarded in the summer months. Tresaith (also half an hour) is another good option, with rockpools and a waterfall as well as places to launch kayaks or paddleboards. Aberaeron (25 minutes) and Gwbert (40 minutes) are among the other beaches you may like to stop off at. One spot that should really be on the schedule is New Quay (25 minutes) – this harbour town is the jumping-off point for sea safaris that take you out in search of the dolphins, seals and basking sharks that dwell in the waters. Away from the shoreline, head inland for a stroll through pretty Cae Hir Gardens (10 minutes) or the various themed areas of the National Botanic Garden of Wales (45 minutes). For something wilder, Brechfa Forest (half an hour) has hiking and mountain bike trails galore to get out on.
