  • Dog-friendly site in the west Wales countryside
  • Top spot for biking and walking: Ceredigion Coast Path 15 mins' drive
  • On-site bar open from Thursday to Sunday
A stay in the Welsh countryside, with greenery on every side and views towards hills in the distance, but still close to beaches and seaside towns… sound like a dream holiday spot? Penuwch Inn Caravan and Camping, 15 minutes’ drive from Tregaron in West Wales, may very well be your spot. The area around Penuwch Inn has plenty of walking and cycling routes for anyone who wants to explore the region (ask your friendly hosts Nicky and Julian for tips). Pick up a map before you arrive, then disappear for the day on a mountain bike, making your way along the Ceredigion Coast Path or the banks of Afon Teifi – the second longest river in Wales – or Afon Aeron. If you prefer two legs to two wheels, you can pick up the Ceredigion Coast Path from Llanrhystud, a 15-minute drive from the site. For drinks, there's a bar on site open between Thursday and Sunday. For food, meanwhile, you can pick up some supplies for the barbecue at Tregaron. And then? Relax in the evenings by turning your eyes to the stars, soaking up the dark skies above the site to see some of the wonders of the Milky Way…

Liked: Lovely campsite with stunning views. We spent 4 nights in some very windy weather but was given the most shelterd pitch as we had an extra gazeebo. Julian and Nicky where very friendly and checked in on us after the worst of the weather to make sure we where ok. The toilet and shower blocks where lovely and very clean and the set up made it very easy as a single person with a child. The red kites where an added bonus and we saw them everyday flying over tha campsite. I would defenetly be back again, hopefully in better weather.

Power optional grass site

Liked: Such a beautiful view and a really peaceful area. The showers have good pressure and a good and warm. Well placed with lots of things to do relatively nearby.

Disliked: I feel like the bar could be a games room or something for in the wet weather for some salvation. The bar isn't always open on the nights it says it is. There aren't any leaflets or anything for what to do nearby but if you catch an owner they're happy to recommend things.

Liked: Everything! The views were absolutely stunning and the site was so peaceful and quiet. Except for the sound of the wonderful red kites circling the site daily and the gorgeous donkeys a few fields away. The on site bar was brilliant and the hosts and the locals made us and our dog very welcome. The facilities were great, toilets and showers cleaned daily and were immaculate. The site has a very friendly, relaxed atmosphere- a true escape from hustle and bustle. Remote feel but a short drive away from nearby towns and villages. Rheidol steam train, Gigrin Farm red kite feeding and boat trips from New Quay all within a short drive away. Don't be put off by the charge for electricity, it costs very little and any you haven't used is reimbursed at the end of your stay. We will definitely be returning, it is our new favourite place! We were very sad to leave this morning and it felt like we were saying bye to old friends which says it all. We would1000% recommend this site if you want a relaxed break with the bonus of a bar and great company.

Disliked: Leaving!

Liked: Arriving at the campsite it was easy to check in. Had other members joining us and was told it was okay to be next to each other. Owners was polite and helpful. Toilets and showers was cleaned everyday. Bar area was clean and friendly to go and have a drink. Nice view and 30 mins drive away from aberystwyth.

Disliked: Hot water wasn't hot all the time and had to wait to get hot water if people had showers in the morning.

Local attractions

Aberystwyth, 35 minutes from Penuwch Inn, has heaps to do: take the funicular up to the camera obscura on the peak of Constitution Hill, explore the ruins of the 13th-century Aberystwyth Castle, or feel the tropical heat at the Magic of Life Butterfly House, 20 minutes’ drive outside the town. A 25-minute drive from Aberystwyth, the spectacular and world-famed Devils Bridge Falls should very much be on your must-see list. If you’d prefer to get to the falls under someone else’s steam, climb aboard one of the steam trains on the Vale of Rheidol railway in Aberystwyth. Sit back and watch the scenery go by until you reach Devils Bridge or get out at one of the other stops to follow the walking trails of the Rheidol valley. In the opposite direction along the Ceredigion coast, the town of New Quay is a top spot for dolphin-spotting boat trips, fishing excursions and stunning beaches overlooking Cardigan Bay. Buzz on over to the New Quay Honey Farm while you’re in the area to visit the meadery, witness the bees at their daily grind and get a taste of their hard work in the tearoom. If you can’t get enough of that New Quay honey, take home a beeswax, honey or mead souvenir from the farm shop.
