  • Peaceful dog-friendly site with views over Cardigan Bay
  • A 35-minute walk from New Quay; footpath to the Wales Coast Path
  • Shops and pubs in New Quay; playground and dog exercise area on site
Raring to go dolphin-spotting on the Wales Coast Path or fishing on a boat trip from New Quay? Very well – here’s Tyr Ffynnon Farm, an advantageous base for such coastal adventures. With 180-degree views over Cardigan Bay and a location just 35 minutes’ walk from New Quay, it would have been a shame to keep this quiet 38-acre working sheep farm for sheep only. Now, families and dogs (on leads) are welcome to come and relax at the elevated peninsular spot. There are plenty of walking areas away from the traffic – and just a couple of hundred metres from the entrance, there’s a public footpath where guests can join the Wales Coast Path. Spectacular views and the chance to spot dolphins… yes please. The coastal path passes through lively New Quay, where activities such as boat trips, sailing, fishing and watersports are on the agenda. Also called Cei Newydd, New Quay has a pretty harbour, sandy beaches and a sound selection of shops, pubs and restaurants for all your foodie desires. The pièce de resistance at Tyr Ffynnon Farm surely has to be the sublime sea-view sunsets that can be seen from the site. Other ace features include the modern shower and toilet facilities, which have hot electric showers, wash basins, toilets, electric hand dryers and electric sockets for hairdryers (in the ladies’ only) and a shaver point (in the gents’). Those with mini family members will also be pleased to find a playground and a fenced dog exercise area on site. Bonus points – the peaceful, friendly site is 20 minutes’ drive from Aberaeron, 35 minutes from Cardigan and 45 minutes from Aberystwyth.

Liked: Everything! Super clear directions in text received after booking. Arrived and got plot sorted within minutes, staff were amazing. Tour of toilets, showers and recycling area. Spotlessly clean and well maintained camping area. The showers are so spacious with chairs so very accessible. So close to Newquay by car or just over half hour walk. The views from our tent was amazing. Will definitely be coming back

Disliked: I honestly had nothing to dislike and couldn’t fault one thing

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Lovely views. Facilities clean. Owners helpful.

Disliked: It doesn't bother me, but you need to be confident reversing your vehicle if you choose to stay here. The lane is narrow, long and very twisty. The washing up room was very sparse, no washing up liquid, scrubbers or even a bin. I know the owner is not obliged to supply these but it is nice and they don't cost much. I also find it odd that the showers cost £1 to use, just put your price up it is much easier.

From the manager: We are so pleased that overall you enjoyed your stay with us. To address some of your points: The council approach country lane is 0.9 mile long and is typical of other approaches to sites in the area. It appears narrower at the moment due to council not cutting the hedges. It is well worth the short trip for the outstanding 180 degree views over Cardigan Bay. We make a small charge of between 20p and a £1 for the showers (depending on how long guests use the shower). This is not only to contribute to the huge rise in energy costs, but also to limit the amount of time guests make use of the shower. Before this system was implemented, users were spending anything up to an hour leading to the frustration of other guests. There were also occasions where dogs, wetsuits and pots and pans to name but a few, were being washed. We try to keep our pitch fees reasonable and are reluctant to raise them as you suggest. Some guests, as indeed yourselves preferred, opt for a non electric pitch at a reduced cost. To raise the cost of the ehu pitches would in effect mean that those customers would be supplementing the cost of the shower facilities those who choose a non-ehu. The washing up room may be sparse but it is spacious and provided as an additional convenience for customers. To supply washing up items in the washroom is not an option that would be considered. Most guests bring their own anyway and would not find it particularly hygienic to make use of used scrubbers/dishcloths. We are under strict regulations re the mixing of waste and found that when bins were previously provided in the wash up room guests were mixing food with other waste materials-not pleasant for us to have the arduous task of separating. Thanks again for staying with us and kindest regards.

Best camp we've stayed at.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Great place to stay, very peaceful and idyllic. Just a few minutes walk to the coastal path and a 30 minute walk down hill into New Quay itself. Super friendly and helpful hosts. Beautiful location with clean facilities. Only two ladies’ toilets and two showers, but plenty enough for when we were there and the showers are so roomy. Great secure dog park next to the children’s’ playground where you can let them off the lead. Was our first visit but won’t be our last! Not sure I’d enjoy it when busy, but that would be the same wherever I went.

Local attractions

Days out in Aberaeron (20 minutes’ drive) – a regency town with a Georgian harbour and multi-coloured houses – could be spent taking yet more coastal walks, tucking into tapas and scallops around the harbour or licking a honey-flavoured ice cream by the sea. Strolls or fishing along the river Teifi might make it onto your itinerary in Cardigan (35 minutes). The town’s castle is on the riverside and has its own escape room. Another historical spot is in St Dogmaels (40 minutes), where there are abbey ruins with medieval roots. Aberystwyth (45 minutes) is much more than a university town. It’s also home to the National Library of Wales, a free museum and heaps of interesting shops. Elsewhere along the coast, Penbryn beach (25 minutes) is accessed through woodlands from the Wales Coast Path. A short detour from here will get you to Tresaith Waterfall (25 minutes).
