  • Luxury site on the banks of Loch Lomond
  • Hiking, mountain biking and boat cruises within half an hour's drive
  • A minute's walk from a shop, ice cream parlour and pub with food
High road or low road… bag a berth at Balmaha Lodges for bumper times on the banks of Loch Lomond. This comfortable site is bang in the middle of Balmaha village, at the southern end of the famed loch and within the Loch Lomond and The Trossacks National Park. This area of over 1,100 square miles is stacked with mountains for climbing and lochs for sailing, rivers for fishing and wildlife... so prepare to be busy. Luckily, your accommodation on the banks of the loch is comfortable and cosy and a minute’s walk from a welcoming pub with food, as well as a village shop and an ice cream parlour. When you’ve had your fill of vanilla ices, have a scenic wander around the shores of the loch, or make for the marina and hire a boat to see it all from the water. If you prefer a slightly easier ride, take a 10-minute ferry trip from Balmaha over to Inchcalloch island, part of the Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve, to spy red deer among the oak woods. For a contrast, make the five-minute car trip to the reserve’s second zone, a lochside wetlands at the mouth of Endrick Water, where you can spot fishing ospreys and waders foraging in the mud.

Local attractions

Both Balloch and Alexandria (25 minutes’ drive) are well supplied with supermarkets, pubs and eateries, but there’s still a wilderness flavour round here, thanks to the marine marvels in the Sea Life Aquarium and the displays of feathered raptors at the Loch Lomond Birds of Prey Centre. If you like your wildlife even wilder, make your way to the Blair Drummond Safari Park (40 minutes), where pretty much the whole A to Z of exotica wanders the grounds, from alpacas to zebras. Whether you’re a chilled hill rambler or a dedicated bagger of Munros, there’s a multitude of mountain paths to tread: routes up Conic Hill start right in Balmaha, while Rowardennen, 20 minutes’ drive away, is where you go to start your assault on Ben Lomond. If you prefer biking it, practice first in a park full of skinnies, drops, jumps and berms at Aberfoyle, half an hour away. Once you're the boss of mountain bikes, tackle the family-friendly circuits of Loch Ard (also half an hour away) or the demanding Glen Loin loop (50 minutes). Bodies and souls may be seeking some refreshment after that, in which case, catch a ferry over to Luss (half an hour from Rowardennen) for soaks in the spa, or tour the distilleries of Glengoyne and Loch Lomond for warming drafts of the water of life (20 minutes and half an hour).
