  • Eco glamping site on an organic farm and 13th-century estate
  • Home of the first beaver reintroduction project in the UK
  • Woodburning stoves, beaver ponds and nearby woodland skills centre
Beavers and Bamff... just brilliant. Bag a break at Bamff Ecotourism for a wildlife-laden stay on a Perthshire farm, among planted and regenerated woodland home to many species of birds and small mammals. This splendid spot is also the site of the first beaver ecological project in the UK, where beavers were reintroduced to the country in 2002 after being hunted to extinction centuries ago. Settle down by the two beaver ponds to see the industrious little critters working at their couple of dozen dams: the two beaver families on the estate are now quite the celebs and have been the subject of many boffin studies as well as several films. The site is on the Bamff estate, owned and managed by generations of the Ramsay family since the 13th century. It's a short stroll (under a mile) from the Scottish Woodland Skills Centre, where all ages can take woodland crafts and skills courses including bushcraft, willow weaving and green woodworking – although it's fair to say you'll never be as skilful a woodworker as the Bamff beavers... Bamff Ecotourism is a mile from Alyth, about 25 minutes' drive north of Blairgowrie and 45 minutes from Dundee. All glamping units are off-grid and have their own woodburning stoves as well as access to logs and kindling. Showers and toilets are a short stroll away, and there's a little honesty shop that can supply healthy meals, snacks and drinks as well as firewood and charcoal for your barbecues and campfires.

The Hideaway cabin

North yurt

Liked: The cosy stove. The honesty shop. The wildlife. The remoteness. The warm duvet. The experience as a whole. The elusive beavers.

Disliked: The dirt road leading to the place (we had a sports car...).

Local attractions

There's a stellar amount of stuff to see and do around Bamff once (if) you've torn your curious self away from the beaver ponds: take a long walk around the estate or borrow a bike from the team for serene sightseeing on a cycling trip. And if you really must hear mote about t he beavers (much recommended)? Guided tours are available to hear all about them and see them in action on the estate. A short drive from Bamff will land you at other stellar sightseeing spots, such as Glamis Castle 25 minutes away, the 14th-century pile that was the inspiration for the Scottish play way back when and later the childhood home of one Queen Mum. Angus 40 minutes away is another top historical pick, with 12th-century Arbroath Abbey and the Pictavia Visitor Centre in the grounds of Brechin Castle. Trot along to the Little Red Town’ of Kirriemuir (30 minutes' drive) for access to horse riding and the Angus Glens, and Peter Pan attractions aplenty; this was the birthplace of JM Barrie. From town, hike along the Angus Glens to the bottom of the Grampian Mountains for climbing and skiing adventures, and the hikes and waterfall of Kirriemuir Den.
