Powered grass caravan site

Liked: The separate rooms with basin, and sometimes loo, for showers. Very clean facilities, tidy site.

Disliked: The location is inland and a drive away from the coast and anything off site.

Liked: The site was clean and well designed. Easy to find straight off A1. Shower block was clean and well equipped.

Disliked: The fan from the main building was very noisy when on the pitches on the top of the hill. It sounded like a plane coming in to land. Serving staff in the restaurant could have been a little more interested in their job.

Disliked: The hard standing pitch where we were felt like we were on a car park. No view and gravel everywhere, quite untidy. Other areas of the park looked a lot nicer.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site (super)

Liked: Good location. Just off the main road so no tight lanes to get the caravan stuck but it's still quiet enough you don't hear the traffic. Bar staff lovely and helpful.

Disliked: Very busy, I didn't realise how busy but that's on me. What I didn't like was the water at our pitch said drinking water, however it tasted strange, even straight out of the tap into a water jug, so you can't say my pipes were dirty. Had to buy seperate drinking water. Also there's only a very small print that says swimming is extra, even getting to reception and checking in, they gave us a list of swimming times and no one said at that point it's pay as you go. On our first day we had a look round the site and tried to book swimming, the man on the desk didn't want to book it, said it's easier if we ring up, he booked it anyway and asked for our pitch , it was like he never knew there were touring pitches. He asked to see my keys to get the pitch number off them, strange as they are my keys. I found the whole thing weird. Arcade games rigged, your prizes on the 2p machines come down but disappear. We had a disappointment 8 year old. Only 5 showers for the whole site. Overall £38 a night for water we couldn't drink, swimming we had to pay extra for and not enough showers.

Local attractions

You won’t find yourselves thirsting for action at Thurston Manor; there are lots of inspiring places to visit in East Lothian, Berwickshire and beyond. Peer at the puffins and gawk at the gannets at the Scottish Seabird Centre - you can zoom in on the nesting colonies on the islands (including Bass Rock, home to a gobsmacking 150,000 gannets) using the Centre’s interactive live cameras, or zoom off on a boat trip to see them in the flesh/feathers, along with grey seals and dolphins if you’re lucky. For more fresh air fun, there are clifftop walks, castle ruins, picnicking and pony trekking across the grassland, woods and salt marshes at John Muir Country Park in nearby Dunbar. Or you could go for a clamber around Tantallon Castle, a majestic fourteenth century stronghold in a photogenic location atop the cliffs overlooking the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock. Not to mention the magnificent golf courses, fishing, horse riding, yachting and water sports in the surrounding area. Whisky lovers will definitely want to make a pilgrimage to the nearby Glenkinchie Distillery, which has an excellent visitor centre and guided tours as well as tastings (and a discount in the shop is included in the very reasonable entrance fee). Last but not least, the brilliant and bonny city of Edinburgh is only 25 miles away.....
