Glamping is a particularly fine way to stay in the Scottish countryside, giving you all the gorgeous outdoor views and fresh air but with the assurance that you’ll have a nicely warm and cosy place to sleep and spend time if a shower or cold breeze comes along… And there’s an extra level of comfort for guests at Ecosse Glamping, in the Lanarkshire countryside about 10 minutes’ drive from Lanark, where the owners have added in lots of lovely extras for a real luxury glamping stay. This is a place where the safari tents are real havens of comfort, with proper beds (and bed linen and towels provided), a sofa, an ensuite bathroom and heating to keep it all cosy. A kitchen corner is kitted out with all the essentials for rustling up your meals and drinks, and there’s a dining table in the tent as well as space to sit outdoors when the weather’s fine. The whole structure is pretty solid, built on a wooden deck and with wooden walls, so you’ll be safe from whatever the Scottish climate should throw at you. The luxury cherry on the top of all this? Outside there’s a private hot tub where you can spend your evenings bubbling away with a glass of something in hand while looking up at the fabulous views of the Clyde Valley. Leaving all this behind may prove tricky, but it’s worth doing as you’ll be within easy reach of places like the Falls of Clyde and the New Lanark heritage site, and Glasgow is only about a half-hour drive away.

Local attractions

Bring your boots along, because there’s some great countryside to explore around here. The trails alongside the Falls of Clyde and Craignethan Castle (both 15 minutes’ drive) are local favourites, or you could take a stroll around the ‘artland’ at Crawick Multiverse (45 minutes). If it’s raining, head underground for a tour of Biggar’s Museum of Lead Mining (40 minutes) – and maybe try your hand at panning for gold. The New Lanark World Heritage Site (15 minutes) is well worth a visit too, taking you back to life in the 19th-century industrial town and with shops, play areas and picnic spots as well. If you’ve got the kids with you, you may also like to try out Clyde Valley Family Park and Valley View At Gouldings (both five minutes). Although there’s much to enjoy in this rural area, it’s also a good idea to get up to Glasgow (half an hour) to visit its museums and Glasgow Science Centre, browse the shops and try out some of its independent restaurants.
