Campervan

General

  • Spectacularly scenic lakeside site on the West Highland Way trail
  • A 20-minute drive from Loch Lomond; 30 from Glasgow; 40 from Stirling
  • Fishing on site; barbecues allowed and breakfast included in price

If you’re fond of Scottish wilderness, wildlife and hillside hiking paths, then it’s highly recommended that you hunker down at this Blanefield site, for it’s right on the West Highland Way walking route and within easy reach of the Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling – plus the waters of Loch Lomond too.

Cue pics, because the views are utterly sensational from here: West Highland Way Campsite looks out over a lake as well as heather-covered hills in the near distance. This is a remote area with lots of outdoor adventuring to try, such as horse riding via the centre two miles away in Strathblane, or fishing for salmon and trout at Allander Water five miles away. Or head to Loch Lomond for more fishing, several hiking trails around the lake, and kayak and boat hire; it's an easy 20 minutes' drive away.

Back at base, set up for days’ worth of angling at the neighbouring lake, and fire up the barbecue when suitably famished. At night, keep your cockles warm with a campfire, and as the cinders smoulder away, sit back and enjoy the dark skies above: this site’s remote locale makes for some pretty sterling stargazing. Once it's light again, fuel up for the day ahead by joining fellow guests for breakfast (it's all thrown in with the price of your stay).

Also on the park (an excellent idea in Scotland's land of midges), are two high-tech midge repellers shipped in from the US: the owners now reckon this might be the only site in Scotland that's now midge free.

Walked the West Highland Way for my local charity (Williamson Hospice). I phoned up to stay here on my first night. Drew, the manager, offered me the accommodation for free. So generous. He even upgraded me to a bedroom in the hotel and gave me a packed lunch to take with me. Amazing hospitality. Amazing Campsite. Amazing Hotel. Amazing Location. Thank you.

Stayed here with my brother on our first day of walking the West Highland Way. Fun place with lots of character. The staff couldn't have been nicer. Very comfortable tent and clean bathroom. Lots of great facilities. Optional heater in the tent, but we didn't need it. Super breakfast with lots of choice. Packed lunches to take with us for the next day. Exceptional.

Sitting drinking Scotch Whiskey after visiting Glengoyne Distillery! We have a wonderful camp fire burning outside our tent in the woods........very romantic. Andrew, Sid and Michael have all been very helpful and even offered to erect our tent for us when arrived. £30 well spent. Tomorrow we are going to swim in the loch!! Will return here on our next trip to Scotland.

Recently retired and new to caravanning. The wife and I originally planned on staying one night here, but after three nights we still don't want to leave! Andrew told us about this site so this is my first ever review. We bought the 2019 Sterling 600 model at the Glasgow Caravan fair at the SECC last month. This is our first week away in it. Superb caravan for beginners like us. Anyway, this campsite is just what we were looking for. Private, clean, fun, free breakfast, WIFI, etc. Bliss!!!!

Andrew the manager told me about pitch up and asked me to review this campsite from a critical perspective. So I gladly will. I am walking the John Muir Way (yes I have the same name!!!) 3 weeks from Dunbar to Helensburgh before I walk the Camino in May. Wild camping is my hobby. Been doing it for 30 years. If you are into wild camping then this place is for you as they have a sister site dedicated to wild campers. Remote with a £1,0000,000 view. Safe and tranquil. Camp fires allowed. What more can I say. Brilliant.

Local attractions

Several active options are within easy reach: as well the West Highland Way and nearby horse riding, the site is 20 minutes’ drive from a golf course eight miles north of Glasgow near the village of Torrance.

For something water-based, Allander water is five miles away for salmon and trout fishing while the south-eastern shores of lovely Loch Lomond are a 20-minute drive away. As well as fishing, visitors can rent themselves a vessel to investigate the island, where a picnic area awaits: do bag lots of local produce to take along...

If you’re planning on sticking to land-based activities in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, plenty of hiking trails lie around the loch and the wider lands for sunset strolls, or you could hike up a munro, tramp around wild glens, or cycle over the Duke’s Pass.

Climbing, bouldering and mountaineering are all popular around the national park too: head to (among many other spots) the mountains around the coastal village of Arrochar for cross-grade summer and winter climbing.

Must see

  • Glasgow Botanic Gardens (12.7 kilometres)
  • Clydebuilt (Scottish Maritime Museum Braehead) (12.7 kilometres)
  • Hunterian Art Gallery (13.4 kilometres)
