  • Isle of Rum bothy with its own indoor barbecue
  • A 10-minute walk from the ferry and from Kinloch's shop and café
  • In a birdwatching haven on the shores of Loch Scresort harbour
For stays among the wilds of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands, and days spent roaming windswept mountains and rugged coastlines, catch a ferry from Mallaig to the Isle of Rum. The crossing's an hour and 20 minutes; after that, make the 10-minute walk from the island’s ferry terminal to Harbour Hut, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ walk too from the tiny hamlet of Kinloch. This is an escape from modern life at its finest: wifi is only available in the Kinloch village hall, so time away from devices is unavoidable, and tourist cars aren’t allowed on the island (free long-term parking can be sorted in Mallaig), so all exploration has to be done on two feet or on a bike. Sticking closer to home base won’t disappoint either: the site’s on the shores of Loch Scresort harbour, with views towards the mountains of the mainland and a ringside seat for avian shows as eagles and Manx shearwaters flap about. Fortunately, the island’s most notorious resident, the midge, won’t hinder enjoyment – the indoor barbecue in the hut makes keeping the insects at bay (and staying nice and cosy while dinner cooks, whatever the weather) a cinch. Facilities on site are shared with Rum Campsite, so toilets, hot showers and fresh water are within easy reach.

Local attractions

Energy-expending explores are absolutely worth it, and lengthy guided and self-guided hikes around the island come highly recommended. The 10-mile walk to Harris to see Bullough’s Mausoleum and the island’s herd of highland cows (roughly a two and a half-hour hike each way), and the hour and 45 minutes' walk to Kilmory’s pristine beach and its views towards Skye, are particular musts. More of a biker than a hiker? Pedal along the 13 miles of tracks that crisscross the island, taking in some of the spectacular scenery along the way. Bikes can be brought on the ferry for free, or they can be hired on the island if travelling light. If visiting during late September or early October, cyclists and walkers should keep eyes peeled for red deer – this is rutting season, and the males get feisty… When peaceful days closer to home base are needed, it’s a 10-minute walk into Kinloch to pick up supplies and local produce from the shop, settle in for local eats in the teashop, and browse for souvenirs in the craft shop, all within the village hall. On the way, make a pitstop at Kinloch Castle, the stunning Edwardian sandstone mansion, which was one of the first big houses in Scotland to have electricity. Need a break from the island? Head back to the mainland to catch the ferry from Mallaig to Skye, and spend days exploring Armadale Castle, the Storr and Talisker Distillery.
