Cor, you'll wish your Grannie’s home was as cool as this: slap bang on the beachfront, with an indoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, tennis courts and Costa coffee on tap… Grannie’s Heilan’ Hame Holiday Park sits beside the powdery white sands of Embo beach near the historic town of Dornoch, in prime position for a romp around the Scottish Highlands. If you’re bringing the family, rest assured that the chances of the little ones getting bored are slim to none. Aside from the pool- and beach-based shenanigans, there’s mini ten-pin bowling, crazy golf, an amusement arcade, kids’ clubs featuring the Starland Krew, plus a great adventure playground with a zipwire, swings and slides. Older children and teens can get stuck into making their own animated movies or hit the decks at a DJ workshop in the Freestyle club. Grownups, meanwhile, will likely appreciate the smashing views across the Dornoch Firth – bottlenose dolphins and seals are regularly seen frolicking in the foam – plus the extensive facilities, which include a bar lounge and restaurant, evening entertainment, shop, launderette and more. Liked: Lots of spaces close to beach and toilet area. Plenty of amenities to use on site

Disliked: Toilet block filthy. Staff member came into check for cleanliness looked at the dirt and filth and walked back out. Didn’t return to clean

Liked: Set in a great location, staff were friendly. Well stocked shop on site and choice of food. Ideal place for families with kids as it has a range of entertainment.

Disliked: Toilets, shower & dishwashing area were not clean and desperately needed some TLC (flush handles broken, locks on doors broken, tiles on the floor cracked, litter all over the site). By the morning the toilet block absolutely reeked and not once did we see anyone cleaning (ee expect the facilities to be cleaned regularly during the holidays due to the increased use). Would not recommend to camp here based on this, better off spending your money at a independently run campsite.

Liked: Location of site and facilities.

Disliked: The area for tents/camping was very uneven and was not flat enough making it unsuitable and very uncomfortable for us… and too far away from toilet facilities.

Liked: Location was excellent, great play area for the kids, close to the beautiful beach and perfect for us.

Dornoch, the pretty little town nearest to Grannie’s Heilan’ Hame Holiday Park, has a range of small independent shops, a cathedral dating back to 1224 and one of the best championship golf courses in the world. Otherwise, if you fancy a day trip, there’s a decent variety of things to do nearby. For a fairytale castle with a French flavour, take a tour of Dunrobin Castle, which stages falconry displays twice daily in its beautiful grounds; Black Isle Wildlife Park has child-pleasing meerkats, lemurs and zebras; whisky lovers can wet their whistle at the Glenmorangie Distillery; and the spectacular waterfalls at Falls of Shin are one of the best places in Scotland to see salmon feats of derring-do as the fish leap upstream between May and September, or to go geocaching, walking and cycling along the forest trails. If you don’t mind travelling a bit further, it’s an easy drive to classic destinations such as John O’Groats, Loch Ness and Ullapool.
