  • Spacious parkland with views over the Solway Firth and Lake District
  • Jacuzzi, sauna, café, bar, crazy golf and play area
  • Close to Scotland's most southerly golf course
Ever seen the film The Wicker Man? If at any point you found yourself admiring the stunning Scottish scenery among the sense of impending celluloid doom (understandable), you'll probably be interested to know that the scenic setting in question was the village of Burrowhead on the Solway Firth. And in Burrowhead is Burrowhead Holiday Village, a park in this scenic setting that's in a spacious hundred acres of parkland with views over the Solway Firth to the Isle of Man and the hills of the Lake District. This is activity land – sea fishing, golf and coastal walks are all very close to hand – and there's space to chill out back on site too as Burrowhead has a Jacuzzi and a sauna. Let the kids loose at the play area, crazy golf, amusement arcade, soft play area, ball pool playroom and toddler splash pool with slide; the park also has pitch and putt golf, a putting green, a snooker room with licensed bar, and an adults-only function room. A shop is there if you want to buy food and fire up your own cooker, but if not, Burrowhead Holiday Village has a well-priced café serving big breakfasts and other meals. Drinks and entertainment are sorted at the Headland family bar. There is wifi throughout the site. Burrowhead Holiday Village has a private water supply and they recommend that guests boil the water before consumption. Dogs are welcome on site and are permitted within the Headland Bar, with the exception of major events such as the Easter, Halloween and New Year's Eve party.

Liked: Views, cafe, lounge bar and people. Easy access to wash blocks, which were clean. Good check out time.

Disliked: The hand dryers are very dated and do not dry your hands. The wash block is freezing. WiFi was not very good from our pitch.

Liked: Location was amazing, facilities were very good. Very quiet.

Disliked: Toilets/showers a bit of a trek, especially at night if you are at the other end of the site.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed our peaceful location. The short 'trek' to the showerblock is the trade-off for the amazing views that our furthest touring area offers. We do hope that you visit us again in the future.

Would recommend to families.

Liked: The site location was beautiful. Staff was super friendly. Toilets were clean. We didn’t use the pool or other facilities as were only there for a day but loved our stay here. Highly recommended. There were no midges and night sky was beautiful. We saw so many stars, kids were fascinated.

Disliked: Nothing.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your time with us and that you were able to view a clear night sky. We are very lucky having such dark skies and fortunate not to be plagued by the Scottish Midge! We do hope that you will visit us again.

Liked: Site was beautifully maintained. Enjoyed having the bar on site. Gorgeous views. Very clean toilet block.

Disliked: Toilet block was a little walk away. Outdoor swimming pool not heated, very chilly.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your time here on site. We work hard to maintain the highest standards and it is good to hear that you found this to be the case. Depending on your pitch, the amenitites can be a short walk away, however we trust that the views outway this. It is a shame that we have experienced some very unseasonal weather which has resulted in some fresh swimming pool temperatures. We do hope that you will visit us again in the future, maybe with warmer weather.

Liked: The staff could not do enough for you. The reception, bar, shop and groundsman staff all.went above and beyond ***** The park has everything you need, even indoor and outdoor pool. The toilet and shower blocks where kept clean aswel as the site. The local village a few minutes drive away has a few shops and a pub. The views from the site are fantastic even when the great Scottish weather tries to spoil them!

Disliked: Hit and miss wifi and phone signal down on the motorhome pitches. Up towards the bar/shop area it's fine.

From the manager: Thank you so very much for taking the time to review your stay with us. We are so pleased that you had such a positive experience, despite the incredibly unseasonsonal weather throughout your stay. Our team work tirelessly to make sure that our holiday makers are treated to a first class experience and I'm pleased to hear that you felt this was the case. Work is currenlty being undertaken to strengthen our wifi signals across the site. I will pass on your comments and praise to all the team. We hope that you visit us again sometime.

Liked: The toilet blocks & laundry room where very clean. Showers where warm & clean. The bar had plenty of drinks to choose from & the beer was kept well. Staff where very helpful throughout the site. The site was very well looked after & grass area's where cut nicely. Although our teenage are to old the play area for the younger children looked well maintained with a very nice barked floor surface.

Disliked: The site is situated on high ground which when the wind is blowing it's open to the elements. The out door pool is very clean & tidy, but is not heated & boy did we know that once in there.lol The sauna was not working & had a fault.

From the manager: Thank you for reviewing your stay with us. Our holiday village, situated on a spectacular headland, can feel very exposed, especially when we've had such unseasonable weather of late. We're pleased that you found our facilities and site to be very clean and well looked after. Our dedicated team work hard at this and I will pass on your compliments. We do hope that you will visit us again.

Local attractions

If you're up for some angling, cast off from rocks, boats or loch near Burrowhead Holiday Village; fishing off the rocks is allowed at the Burrowhead coast and at the local beaches. All of this scenery lends itself well to walks as well: once you've wandered along the coast a bit, try the trails at Kirroughtree and through the Galloway Forest Park. This is top birdwatching territory too, so look out/up for birds when you're around this part of coast, and it's prime dark skies land for stargazing afterwards. Popular attractions in the area are Bladnoch Distillery, Galloway Forest Park, the book town of Wigtown and the Cream o' Galloway, a dairy farm that produces topping ice cream and has a crazy golf course. Nearby Whithorn is where Christianity in Scotland evolved under the leadership of St Ninian; the Whithorn Story Visitor Centre and St Ninian's Cave are the main tourist draws. Other nearby days out could include the 75 acres of child-friendly Castle Kennedy Gardens; a look at the inhabitants of Monreith Animal World, and the watersports and activities of Galloway Activity Centre (about an hour away). Finally, the port of Cairnryan is about 40 miles away: sail to Larne in Northern Ireland from here and drive along the coast to have a day in Belfast.
