  • Spacious farm site 20 minutes’ drive from Galloway Forest Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Newton Stewart and 25 minutes from Stranraer
  • Quiet, simple dog-friendly pitches with dark-sky stargazing
Lochs and castles, stanes and lush landscapes… it doesn’t get much more Scottish than this. If a holiday living out romantic visions of Scotland appeals, get along to Balloch O’Dee Campsite, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the Dumfries and Galloway town of Newton Stewart. The farm site is well placed for active forays out and about: it's a 20-minute car journey to Galloway Forest Park, where there are trails to follow, plus deer, goats and birds to spot. Mountain bikers are well placed here too, with not one but two 7stanes centres (Glentrool and Kirroughtree) within 30 minutes of base. Explores can start directly from site as well, as there are plenty of tracks through this scenic slice of countryside. After your outings, evenings can be spent together around the firepit, looking up at the stars (which are easy to see thanks to Galloway Forest Park’s Dark Sky Reserve status). This is a quiet site, so you should have plenty of peace in which to marvel at those skies.

What customers say

Great spot, loved the chill vibes & friendly hosts. Quirky loos! Spacious sites, free-roaming chooks. Downsides: patchy signal, mozzies, occasional noise & chill showers. Still a winner though!

Unpowered grass site

Liked We loved the space and the views here. It wasn’t very busy and there were plenty of clean facilities for us to use. The environment was absolutely glorious - there were views in every direction and the campsite was incredibly well-kept, clean and cared for. We stayed as a couple but there were also lots of families on site. There was also a huge chalkboard listing places to eat and visit and you could purchase logs from reception for camp fires. This campsite was a real find and we are so glad we were able to stay here. It is very close to Glentrool and Kirroughtree for any mountain bikers out there!

Liked Absolutely lovely campsite. Lots of quirky added extras. Very clean toilets and showers. Plenty space to pitch up. Fire pits and benches dotted all over for everyone to use.
Glamping facilities available too... including Bothies, yurt and cabins. Definitely worth it. Not far from the local shops too.

Unpowered grass site

Liked The Toilets/showers/washing up facilities were 10/10, the best ive ever used on a campsite!

The simplicity, peace and quiet is exactly what we wanted. We all had a great time.

Just wanted to add that the 1 star for WiFi is not negative, we enjoyed being cut off from the world for a few days 😊

Disliked The only thing we didn't enjoy was the temperature of the showers, I could barely stand under the water as it was too hot and it was certainly too hot for my young children.

It would also be good if the campsite sold basic items such as bread and milk.

Unpowered grass site

Liked What is not to like, this was my second visit to this site this year. The location is great. Being a biker the roads around in the area appeal. A clean well maintained site with top quality facilities.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Beautiful campsite with excellent facilities all maintained well.
The site was lovely and peaceful with lovely campers until Saturday so maybe avoid weekends.

Disliked Some of the other campers were quite selfish - not the campsites fault but other places we have stayed have had staff around to monitor.
On Saturday an influx of rowdy people came in with loads of kids. The family's camped together but sadly just behind us even though we had tucked ourselves in a corner as far away as possible for our nervous dog. The family were really loud and playing ball games and with flying planes very close to our tent and car - a communal area or sectioned off bit in the centre for kids to play would be a good addition because to be fair to them they weren’t miss behaving just not ideal for us as our dog ended up ill from stress. Someone also stole all our freeze blocks from the freezer meaning we had to find a shop selling ice so our cool box contents weren’t ruined.

Local attractions

Anyone drawn here by the possibility of active stays will be well chuffed by proximity to Laggan Outdoor (half an hour’s drive away) where there are zipwires to zoom along, archery to perfect, Segways to zip around on and slingshots for flinging self and friends through the air. Prefer splashier days? It’s 50 minutes to Galloway Activity Centre to have a go at watersports (and mountain biking and climbing). Other watery options are much closer at hand too – the nearest beach (Sandhead) is about 25 minutes from the site, as is the coastal/loch-side town of Stranraer. Stick around in Stranraer to explore the handful of museums, take a turn on the boating lake and visit the Castle of St John. Literary types should make the next chapter a stop at Wigtown – designated Scotland’s National Book Town – where well-timed stays should coincide with the annual book festival. For a taste of that classic image of Scotland, make sure to round out stays with a tour of the ruined Threave Castle, the Edwardian Broughton House and Garden (the one-time home of artist EA Hornel), and the hulking, stunning Culzean Castle, all between 45 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes from base.
