  • Spacious family- and pet-friendly park with a country park feel
  • Private sandy beach on site; a 15-minute drive from Kirkcudbright
  • Indoor pool, café, lounge bar, amusement room and 18-hole golf course
If the kids say they’re bored at Brighouse Bay Holiday Park at Kirkcudbright on the Dumfries and Galloway coast, you might want to send them home. Sublime Irish Sea views, heaps of on-site activities, three ponds, a private beach and countryside walks are all yours for the taking. It's pretty spectacular by night too, as the setting in Galloway's dark-skies region means the stargazing here is stellar: the subdued lighting on site enhances it all the more. Pretty much everything you could want is on site or close by: if golf on the 9/18 course at Brighouse Bay Golf course doesn’t float your boat, wander along the coast (camera in hand) or follow the signposted hikes through the local woodland. Other stunning options include launching a kayak from the bay’s all-tide slipway or taking in the views with a drink from the on-site lounge bar… If the weather should be less than co-operative, stay undercover in the park’s Jacuzzi and indoor pool (available for an additional fee). There's a separate splash area for toddlers or the indoor amusement room. Also on site – yes, there’s more – the well-stocked shop keeps guests sorted for essentials and the café serves hot and cold meals and snacks to eat there or in the family lounge bar. Make a visit to reception your first stop, where staff can offer suggestions on what to do and see while you stock up on leaflets, maps and gifts. Wardens are on site if you need any pointers during your stay. On-site amenities include two shower blocks with ensuite cubicles for families, plus separate ladies and gents' sections in the larger block. Dishwashing and laundry facilities are also available.

What customers say

Spacious, tidy campsite, great for families. Clean loos/showers, awesome playground, close to bay/beach. Pool & eatery get a thumbs up. Mostly peaceful, though some noise noted. Phone signal & WiFi can be dodgy.

Liked I liked the shop and surrounding areas shop prices were fair, loved the beach nearby, kids loved the park

Disliked My pitch was rocky (63) WiFi I paid for wouldn't stay on any longer 3 seconds, there was a riot opposite us between a group of ppl at around 1 am shouting swearing too rowdy and too loud should possibly introduce regular patrols throughout a 24 hr period, showers weren't very clean, felt like sardines crammed into a tin, had a dreadful experience it's not the place it's the ppl going,, needs to be manned better

Great site with loads to keep kids busy. Not for adults seeking peace!

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked Layout of site, pitches and on-site facilities (shop, shower options). Good location, beach and coastal walks. Lots for kids to do, play park and swimming pool. Variety suited us, as a large group including some children and dogs.

Disliked Site does warn of poor signal and wifi before booking…. and they’re right. You can purchase a package but it’s still a bit intermittent. Not too much of a problem for us. Just need to be prepared.

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked We spent 7 days here in glorious sunshine. The staff were extremely helpful, whether in reception, the shop that was well stocked and reasonably priced or the bar, we especially loved the layout of the site. Pitches were generous, it was broken up into several fields so didn’t appear as big as it was, we were placed opposite the kids play area and a legendary wooded area that our kids like most of the kids their age (under 10) felt so safe to play in making dens, swinging on rope swings from a large tree and feeling free to be kids whilst remaining in our sight throughout. Aside from that there’s a large play area for various age groups and a swimming pool on site to keep them entertained. There was kids entertainment on 2 of the nights which was a great buzz for them too. Toilets and shower blocks I can’t fault, 3 different blocks to appeal to different tastes, always clean. We had several dogs in our group, for the furry members there was walks in the woods along the shoreline and along the beach or up on the headland along the golf course to enjoy. I can’t fault it. 10/10 from me. Note not that it’s their fault there is no phone signal in the area, but you can sign up to WiFi for the week to have online access which was just fine.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Loads of activities on site, kids had loads of fun on the playground and pool, weather was amazing , everywhere was clean and tidy. We liked that we could the washing machine and dryer too.

Disliked Because we stayed for 5 days, it would’ve been great if we had a chiller or freezer to store our extra food. At least we had a Tesco 15min away and we could drive there to buy ingredients to prepare our food.
Site is big, so it would benefit if there would be any bikes to rent to visit the whole site, just an idea for future maybe .

Powered concrete and grass caravan site (TV aerial)

Liked It was great being opposite the huge kids play area. Meant we could see our little boy playing and provided him with some freedom.

Disliked The road in isn't the best, it's narrow (single track) and full of pot holes. You have to pay for WiFi and at £152 (which isn't even fully serviced) was quite expensive, then the pool worked at at £15 for one hour for 2 adults and one child, there are no toys and the jacuzzi wasn't on either. The facilities were clean but you have to pay to use the hairdryer. I thought it was fairly expensive. The private beach isn't somewhere you can sit and relax and build sand castles as it's all rocks.

Local attractions

Dumfries and Galloway is packed with pursuits for all ages and interests – and it must be pointed out here that the ice cream and nature trails of the Cream O’Galloway ice cream factory are a mere 15 minutes' drive away… Also nearby is The Cocoabean Company (15 minutes' drive) at Kirkcudbright, which has interactive children’s workshops and a chocolate shop (hurrah) alongside well-equipped and roomy indoor and outdoor play areas. While in town, kick around in the grounds of 16th-century MacLellan's Castle (15 minutes) in the centre of Kirkcudbright, and have a look at Broughton House & Garden (15 minutes), former home of one of the Glasgow Boys EA Hormel and housing a huge collection of works by Robert Burns (painter, not poet Rabbie). At Gatehouse of Fleet (20 minutes), about nine miles to the north-west from Kirkcudbright, the Mill on the Fleet art gallery holds regular exhibitions and events like literary launches and talks. Follow up a morning here with an afternoon at 15th-century Cardoness Castle (20 minutes) or around the thousands of species blooming around at Cally Gardens (20 minutes). And a few more gems that must be seen on a Dumfries and Galloway holiday: a boat trip to the Gem Rock Museum (35 minutes) at Creetown, filled with fossils, rocks, minerals and gemstones, and a stargazing trip to Galloway Forest Park (40 minutes), the first designated Dark Sky Park in the UK.
