  • Well-maintained site just outside Gretna, in Dumfries and Galloway
  • Dumfries half an hour’s drive; Caerlaverock Castle 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; several golf courses within a half-hour drive
It almost sounds like the set-up to a joke – why did three lads from Northern England move to Gretna, in Scotland? To open Braids Caravan Park, that’s why. David (from Northumberland), Paul (Tyneside) and Tim (Yorkshire) have set up this site on the outskirts of Gretna (a 10-minute walk from the town and its shops, restaurants and pubs), in Dumfries and Galloway. Easily accessed from main roads like the M6 and A74, the site is peaceful and surrounded by well-maintained greenery (including leafy cherry trees), with level hardstanding pitches and lawn areas for each caravan, plus a large area with picnic tables for alfresco eating. And while you devour your dinner… who knows? You might be lucky and be treated to views of the spectacular Northern lights. Each pitch comes with electric, water and drainage hook-up points, and the site has a pristine toilet and shower block (including spacious facilities for disabled guests), a washing-up area and a launderette. Scotland is renowned for its golf courses, and there are a handful within a half-hour drive; if you want a proper Scottish links golf course, though, you’ll have to go a little farther, to Southerness Golf Club (one hour’s drive), on the Solway Firth. The Solway Firth coastline is, of course, well worth exploring even if you’re not into golfing. Your canine companion might enjoy a walk on beaches such as Powfoot and Annan (20 minutes), while history buffs should continue on to Caerlaverock Castle (35 minutes), a moated, three-sided fortress with a long history.

Liked Easy to find, access was easy. Very welcoming and gave us all the information required. We walked everywhere locally as there is a lot around. Plenty of places to eat out or get takeaway. Would recommend the Indian just up the road (Mcdhaba). Lovely friendly locals. We visited Annan which was a ten minute drive, a beautiful thriving town.

Disliked Not a big disappointment bit the hotel beside the site had a wedding function on until after midnight, it didn't bother us as we don't go to bed until late. I could imagine some people complaining though.

OK for an emergency stop over which we did.

Liked easy to book.

Disliked The hotel next door had an event so loud music until midnight. One set of toilets were out of order due to wipes down the toilet.
Very busy site overlooked on one side with houses.

Liked Wasn't anything that springs to mind tbh. The site was neatly presented.

Disliked The kennels nearby waking us at 7 ISH, the pitch , impossible to get level. The pitches were far too close together (unless you were on a super pitch but did not see the option for this.) it was also a bit like pitching in someone's back garden there were that many live in caravans.wifi available but it did not work.

Clean and tidy site, very conveniently located.

Liked Well laid-out site with good proximity to the M6 and M74 and to the Gretna outlet centre.

Disliked Toilet block somewhat outdated but good sized toilet cubicles with washbasin included was very convenient and spotlessly clean.

Local attractions

Cross the border into England to visit Carlisle (20 minutes’ drive), where in 1568 a tower in the medieval castle was ‘home’ to Mary, Queen of Scots for a couple of months (she was a prisoner, really). The 13th-century cathedral has a splendid choir area, with a star-studded sky-blue ceiling and stained-glass windows. In Dumfries (half an hour), the Dumfries Museum displays regional artefacts such as fossils, prehistoric weapons and Victorian farming tools; in good weather, it also runs demonstrations of its camera obscura. Cross the River Nith via the stone Devorgilla Bridge to get to the town centre and find the monument to poet Robert Burns. In addition to the long-distance multi-use path circling Kielder Water and a large network of hiking biking trails, Kielder Forest (one hour) is home to assorted wildlife, including nesting ospreys and England’s largest population of red squirrels.
