Anwoth Caravan Park: Nearby beach

General

  • Quiet park within walking distance of Gatehouse of Fleet
  • In a wildlife haven and a few miles from the coast
  • Free use of sister park with pool, restaurant, gym and solarium

If you're after a quieter vibe at a family holiday park in Dumfries and Galloway, you'll very much like Anwoth Caravan Park.

This is the sister site of Auchenlarie Holiday Park (also on Pitchup.com), in a peaceful wildlife haven setting near the pretty town of Gatehouse of Fleet and in an area that's inspired Scottish bards and artists for centuries. But – what genius – guests at Anwoth can also use the facilities at Auchenlarie, which is about four miles/seven minutes' drive along the A75 (turn right on leaving Anwoth and look for Auchenlarie signposted on the left) and which has a heated indoor pool, restaurant, takeaway and leisure centre with gym and solarium among loads loads more. Entertainment and leisure passes available for daily, short break or weekly stays: buy on arrival at Anwoth.

But back to the peace and quiet… Anwoth is in an area where you can sit still and see a lot of wildlife: herds of deer regularly roam the surrounding landscape, you might see otters if you're very very quiet, and you'll likely spy birds of prey and red squirrels among the many local species. This is also serious angling locale, particularly for salmon and trout fishing in the nearby rivers of the Esk, Annan, Nith, Ken, Dee and Cree.

Anwoth has a launderette, washing facilities and a shower and toilet block on site. Restaurants, cafés, bars, craft shops and a well-stocked convenience store are at Gatehouse of Fleet a short walk away; the town has a local bus service too.

Please note

Facilities/activities including use of leisure facilities, round of mini golf, solarium, gym are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bed linen and towels are not provided for caravan hire, but guests can order a pack of these on arrival.

Fantastic Caravan and camp site. Very laid back and relaxed atmosphere. Easily a 5 minute walk to three very nice pubs all serving great food. There's also a vegetarian/vegan pizza restaurant for sit in or takeaway. We had bikes with us so were able to explore the local parks and wooded areas. We also cycled out to Cardoness Castle which was interesting. Our 8 year old enjoyed the local park although it would have been nice to have something like that within the camp site as there were quite a lot of children staying there - that would be my only negative comment. The facilities were always clean and tidy and far superior to previous sites I've visited - you can even have a relaxing bath for £1! We enjoyed visiting other villages and towns around the area; Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas, Stranraer, Newton Stewart and Mossyard - the nearest beach which was only a 10 minute drive from the campsite. We visited the Cocoa Bean Factory where our daughter was able to make her own chocolates and they had a fantastic indoor/outdoor play area. We also visited the Cream O''Galloway and had the best ice-cream I've tasted in years. Overall the location, cleanliness and value for money at this camp site was unbeatable. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would definitely recommend it to family, friends or anyone we speak to. Thank you for a great holiday.

Only negative comment i could make would be that it would be nice to have had a small play park on site. My daughter got a bit bored cycling around the camp in circles and the other children were, at some points, getting on guests nerves kicking their footballs into tents/caravans by accident. It would be better if they had a small area to congregate and play together. Just a thought.

Good location for driving to local beaches. Nice flat pitch, close to toilet block. Clean facilities. Helpful staff. Local amenities within walking distance.

    Disliked:

Tent is large and pitch is small so do feel like encroaching on neighbour’s. Helped a friend to pitch and hard to get pegs in corner pitch. The check-in and out times differed on initial booking and email sent a day before arrival which is confusing.

Mark, was so helpful and friendly.
The toilet/shower block was clean with more than enough cubicles. The water pressure was amazing!
There are 2 great parks really close by, as are a couple of shops and pubs.
So handy to be able to use the facilities at the sister site but come back to the peaceful anwoth site.

Local attractions

Anyone with any sense should be quite the fan of Dumfries and Galloway, for many many reasons including its wildlife and birdwatching, its lush landscape and the evidence of its rich history, archaeology and art in its castles, towers, abbeys, earthworks and standing stones. And did you know that JM Barrie had the idea for Peter Pan while in Dumfries – and that nearby Sanquhar has the oldest post office in Scotland…?

Paul, Neil and Bob (the new generation of Swalwells to own Amwoth Caravan Park) also suggest a look at Whithorn, on the southern tip of the Machars peninsula and the seat of Christianity in Scotland, and at Lochmaben as the birthplace of Robert the Bruce. And if you like reading Rabbie, you might also like to see Dumfries, home and resting place for famed Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Ecclefechan, the birth town of Thomas Carlyle, is also within reach – do be sure to have an Ecclefechan butter tart while you're there.
