Direct access from the park

  • Secluded seaside family park
  • Direct access to a spectacular sandy beach
  • Shop, takeaway and picnic area
What a secluded and sandy Scottish sojourn can be had at Sandyhills Bay Holiday Park: it's by the sea with smashing views over the bay and has direct access to a beaut beach. And it's in lush locale for foresty and nature walks too, as it's close to the RSPB reserve at Mersehead and the walking trails and wildlife of Dalbeattie Forest. More? Sandyhills is also near the yachting village of Kippford and shooting down slopes on the world-famed 7stanes mountain bike trails, and has an 18-hole golf course, riding centre and an indoor swimming pool with restaurant all a short walk away. The Sandyhills Bay facilities are kept to excellent standards and include a modern heated toilet and shower block, a launderette and covered washing-up sinks. A well-stocked shop is next to reception along with a beach takeaway and picnic tables. Wardens are on site if you need any help or info during your stay. And yet more evidence of Sandyhills Bay's lush locale? The spectacular coastal walk to Rockcliffe, shown on More 4's Walks with my Dog programme, starts from the park.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: We stayed for 3 nights over the bank holiday weekend. It wasn't to busy. Plenty of choice of where to pitch the tent. We pitched just by the stream as it seemed quieter on the side near the stream not overlooking the beach where most of the families were pitched and we had 2 dogs so we had plenty of room to peg them in and not have to worry about them . Friendly grounds staff and the coast is beautiful whether raining or in the sun. We did the coastal hike to Rockliffe which is just under 5 miles and has stunning views and little enclosed beaches along the way. There's also a great forest walk just 15 mins drive away in Dalbeattie which the dogs loved. Definitely recommend!

Liked: Staff were welcoming. Beach was minutes away. Small friendly clean site, aimed at families probably with younger children but we still enjoyed it as it was relatively peaceful.

Disliked: Phone signal not great but that's not the sites problem.

Disliked: 1st night, high winds and very wet. Luckily our tent survived and water drained away easily from sight.

Powered grass tent site

Liked: Fantastic location right on the beach with views across the Solway Firth from our pitch. Friendly and helpful staff. Shower block, toilets and pot washing area were clean and well maintained.

Disliked: The lack of any recycling was a shock - everything had to go into general waste. We would have appreciated a communal kitchen area/bothy with a freezer to refresh freezer blocks. Other sites offered microwave, kettle, fridge and freezer. Sandyhills seemed more focussed on the static caravans.

Local attractions

Dumfries and Galloway is a cracking part of Scotland, filled with museums, gardens, wildlife, walks, art galleries and farms for the small to pet animals, play and see how much ice cream they can wangle out of the grownups. Towards Dumfries is Mabie Farm Park, the Paul Jones Museum and Sweetheart Abbey; in town, you'll probably find a festival at any time of the year, along with shows at Scotland's oldest working theatre the Theatre Royal and exhibitions at Dumfries Museum. Also have a potter around the Motte of Mark, the village of Castle Douglas and Galloway Forest Park; info on what to see and do in Dumfries and Galloway is in the reception.
