Hardstanding and grass tent pitches with electric hookup

  • Adults-only pitches in a peaceful Ayrshire walled garden
  • Girvan beach and boat trips 15 minutes' drive; 20 minutes to Ayr
  • In a certified dark-skies area for excellent stargazing
Lovely views by day, fabulous dark skies by night – and a truly peaceful atmosphere at all hours. That’s the rather tempting offering at The Walled Garden Touring Park, an adults-only site in rural Ayrshire about 10 minutes’ drive from Maybole. As the name suggests, pitches here are set in an attractive walled garden that’s part of the historic Kilkerran Estate – a location that provides both shelter and some lovely greenery and trees as the backdrop for your stay. There’s an electric hookup for each pitch, and you’ll also have access to shared facilities including a laundry room, a washing-up area, a fridge and a freezer. Toilets and showers are provided, and there’s also a chemical disposal point for the tourers. There’s a very peaceful atmosphere at this park, so you should really be able to relax as you stoke your barbecue in the evening and wait for the stars to come out. This is a certified dark-skies area so you should be in for a treat (as long as the clouds behave…). By day, you may like to start with a short stroll to the nearby waterfall before heading out into the wider area for some time hiking, cycling or exploring the region’s castles. Ayr is about 20 minutes’ drive away for some town time, and it’s a 15-minute journey to Girvan for the beach, coast walks and boat trips to Ailsa Craig. Dogs are welcome at the park, so feel free to bring them along to help you explore this quiet corner of the Scottish countryside.

What customers say

Peaceful, walled-garden site with top-notch facilities, including a great communal kitchen. Friendly owners & locals, plus a great spot for exploring. Most loved the calm vibe, though some had minor water pressure/disposal point hiccups, and midges/mud after rain were noted.

Power optional concrete and grass tent site

Liked Lovely welcoming hosts. Brilliant kitchen and toilet/shower block. Super quiet (although I missed the sound of children playing joyfully). Amazing forest adjacent with lovely walk up to the waterfall. Large amount of space for each pitch. Close to lochs, hills, coast and towns and around an hour of Glasgow.

Disliked There was very little shade

Liked Close location to our home. Owners were very friendly.

Disliked Facilities were ok, water points not all working terribly well, chemical waste point not cleaned regularly, some toilets had no paper in them for two days.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're really pleased that you enjoyed our location and found us friendly - that means a lot to us.
We're very sorry to hear that some aspects of your stay didn't meet expectations. We do wish these issues had been reported to us during your visit, as we are always on site and would e been able to resolve them immediately.
For clarity -
All of our water points are fully operational. If another guest is using one at the same time, the pressure can temporarily reduce, but the supply itself is working correctly.
Our chemical disposal point is cleaned regularly throughout the day. During busy periods it can unfortunately be affected if a previous user doesn't leave it as they found it.
Toilet paper is checked and replenished frequently, but again, if something's runs out between checks, we're always happy to restock straight away if we are notified.
We take all feedback seriously and continually work hard to maintain high standards across our family run park, as you can see from our previous reviews, the issues you have raised are definitely not a regular occurrence. We hope we'll have the chance to welcome you back so you can enjoy a better experience next time.

Liked It was very calm and peaceful. Lovely quiet site with friendly owners and residents. The bathrooms and kitchen/laundry were ramped and wheelchair accessible (although no accessible cubicle so you need to be ambulant). Very clean. Nice woodland walk on road.

Local attractions

This part of the world is sometimes nicknamed the ‘Ayrshire Alps’, and it’s an excellent area for days of hiking and mountain biking – some of it pretty challenging, it should be said. There are gentler walks and bike rides to be had nearby too, along with other outdoor activities like horse riding, fishing and golf. The Galloway Forest Park (20 minutes’ drive) is a particularly good spot for some time spent among woodland and lake scenery – but don’t head home too early as this is also a Gold-Tier Dark Sky Park (the first in the UK to be designated as such, in fact). Bring your telescope or binoculars along, or see if any tours and events are being run by the Dark Sky Rangers. To take in some of the area’s heritage, head to places like Culzean Castle and Souter Johnnies Cottage or spend some time in Ayr, visiting the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum (all 20 minutes away). Over at the coast, Girvan’s sandy beach (15 minutes) is a nice place to visit, and there are boat trips to wildlife-rich Ailsa Craig.
