  • Secluded 34-acre farm within half-hour’s drive of Bristol and Bath
  • A 10-minute woodland walk to a pub serving food; bus stop nearby
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed; foraging workshops available for a fee
Choose your own pitch at the 34-acre Dagger Wood Campsite. Among lots of leafy greenery, this park is on a family farm in Clutton and just half an hour’s drive from both Bristol and Bath. Eye it all up from the seating areas and picnic benches or while settling down by one of the firepits. Barbecues are permitted at this dog-friendly park as well, so get the blaze going and plonk yourself down for alfresco eats. If cooking is a no-no when you’re on a hol, wander 10 minutes through woodland to a pub serving meals. After other activities besides ambling? The team here also run outdoor pursuits such as wild food foraging workshops and fitness bootcamps (additional fees apply). If you fancy a ride on a tractor, then your wish is the owners’ command. The amenities at this site may be limited (two cold open-air showers, four composting toilets and fresh running water), but the friendly father and son team will pull out all the stops to make yours a comfortable stay. As the site is large, with various levels of uneven ground and hills, they can also lend a hand if mobility is an issue. If you’re leaving the car at home, the nearest bus stop is a short walk down the road and public transport runs to Bristol’s centre and Glastonbury. There's a car park for vehicles, as parking next to your pitch is not permitted.

Liked: Lovely site with very private and quiet camping areas - barely saw any of our fellow campers. Hard to believe only 40mins from Bristol.

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked: Beautiful woodland surroundings with secluded pitches. Henry the manager was very welcoming and helpful. All the facilities were clean and well kept. I bought a copy of one of Henry's books and it made for a very entertaining fireside read. The perfect place if you want to hang out in the woods and get away from it all. After reading the book I plan on coming back and try out a foraging course and the workout.

Liked: Loved everything about this place. If wild camping is your thing then this is exactly what you're looking for.
Definitely look around for your pitch, we settled at 17 and we dont regret it.
The owner is lovely and nothing is too much trouble.

Disliked: Nothing at all. Its a fab place.
Just a suggestion, maybe on the way down to pitches 18/17 its a bit of a hill so maybe some man made steps could be put in. (I lost my socks and sliders (my own fault for wearing sliders while wild camping) as I slipped back down in the dark 🤣.

Liked: We had a top quality stay at Dagger Wood over the Easter weekend! Perfect for that secluded wild camping feel, with the bonus of toilet and wash facilities on site. Henry even threw in a free bag of kindling as there was a little wait on the logs I'd purchased 😎 Plenty of wood for a 4 hour fire each evening! We also walked along the old railway line into the local villages and enjoyed some drinks at the Temple, and Railway Inn before heading back to camp. Highly recommend if traditional woodland camping is your thing! We'll be staying again 🏕️

Liked: It's like wild camping but with the permission of a friendly and helpful landowner (Henry) and an easy way to pay to say thank you. Wish there were more places like this.
Plus you can buy logs so you can make a fire easily and in places the land owner is happy with.

Disliked: Not much. The pitch we were on suffered from constant noise from the busy A37. Easily sorted with ear plugs, but be aware in case this is an issue for you.

Liked: The campsite was absolutely beautiful and had a real off-grid feel — exactly what we were hoping for. There are compost toilets dotted around the site and drinking water taps within easy reach. There were plenty of pitches to choose from, and the kids loved having the freedom to explore for hours on end — it felt like a proper little adventure for them.

Henry, the campsite manager, was brilliant — super friendly and full of knowledge. He took us on a foraging walk around the site where we learned to identify all sorts of edible plants (and got to taste them too!). Our favourite was the common marrow, which surprisingly tastes a bit like apple skin — that was definitely a highlight of the trip and such a memorable experience.

Disliked: If you want kindling & logs supplied to you it's quite pricey due to an increase in costs from the sites sustainable log supplier. (Nets of logs £13.00 and kindling for £10.00).

Local attractions

Check out Chew Valley Lake (10 minutes’ drive) if you’re into birdwatching and fishing, or attempt to get a glimpse of some of the UK’s native four-legged animals at the Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park (20 minutes). For city slicking once you’ve ticked off walks and cycle rides through the Combe Down Tunnel (25 minutes), make a beeline for Bristol and see the cathedral and zoo, making sure to stop off at the Brunel-designed Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain ship as well (25 minutes). Bath’s another unmissable urban destination – head to this spot for the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge (half an hour), then wander around Wells, a tiny city home to a cracking cathedral (30 minutes) and the gateway to the Wookey Hole Caves. If you’re into all things bohemian, drop by Glastonbury too and browse the offbeat boutiques before taking a walk up to Glastonbury Tor for fab views over the countryside (45 minutes).
