  • Spacious bell tent on a rural Wiltshire smallholding
  • A 20-minute drive to Salisbury and 30 minutes to Stonehenge
  • Sole use of the site, with barbecues and covered kitchen provided
No need to pick your way around other people and their kit at this secluded site: book your patch at The Firs, in the village of East Grimstead, and you’ll have half an acre of well-kept Wiltshire meadow all to yourselves. That generous offering gives you plenty of space for all manner of outdoors time… whether you’re up for gallivanting around in nature or lying back to watch the world go by (hammocks, deckchairs and picnic benches are artfully spread around the site to aid with the latter). Those who’d rather get up and ramble should venture off to Bentley Wood, a couple of miles away, a sprawling forest that's home to some of the UK’s rarest butterfly species. Wiltshire is renowned for its prehistoric landscape, but why leave the modern world behind? The swish bell tent is stacked with top-notch facilities, with access to a piping hot shower and a private loo. The site was designed with outdoor cookouts in mind, so there’s no need to bring the kitchen sink as facilities are provided. Outdoor chefs can choose between a gas and coal-fired barbecue, and there’s also a covered kitchen, complete with cooking equipment, for when you need protection from the elements. A stack of firewood is also thrown in to help keep you toasty on chilly evenings under the stars.

Local attractions

History (in the form of a famed cathedral and the 18th-century Mompesson House) sits cheek-by-jowl with a range of shops and places to eat in Salisbury (20 minutes’ drive). If you fancy a car-free jaunt, the city is also easily accessible from the site by bus. Prehistoric Stonehenge (half an hour) is a must-see, of course, but were you aware that there’s also a second Neolithic site – Woodhenge – about the same distance away? If ancient druids are your thing, you might also want to venture up to Avebury Stone Circle (around an hour). For tiddler-pleasing days, head over to Paultons Park (half an hour) for rides and an audience with Peppa Pig, or aim for the wilder beasts that roam the plains of Longleat Safari Park (just under an hour). If you fancy filling a day or two with rural rambles (and maybe a pub lunch or two along the way), cross into Hampshire for the trails and taverns of the New Forest. First-timers may like to get their bearings at Lyndhurst’s New Forest Heritage Centre (half an hour).
