Grass pitches among the trees

  • Family camping on tree-shaded pitches in Wiltshire’s Savernake Forest
  • A 35-minute drive Stonehenge, and an hour to Longleat Safari Park
  • Forest walks and bike rides from site; Marlborough 20 minutes' walk
Peace and quiet are the watchwords at Postern Hill Campsite, a woodland park bordering ancient Savernake Forest in Wiltshire, with plenty of flora and fauna to keep an eye out for. Spacious and wonderfully private, the level grass pitches are shaded by ancient oak, beech and sweet chestnut trees, or carved into the bushes. Wherever you pitch up, you’ll be instantly surrounded by nature – you might spy deer among the trees, and there are often owls hooting after dark. In summer, the park is a hotspot for rare and protected bats. Full of registered trees, Savernake Forest has the largest beech avenue in Britain and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, thanks to its diversity of wildlife. And the forest is right next to the pitches, so you can make the most of the easy walking (dogs love this place too) and cycling trails in the 4,500-acre woodland and its valleys. Tranquillity may reign on site, but Postern Hill is only 20 minutes’ stroll from the pretty market town of Marlborough, where you can pick up picnic supplies and other foodie treats from delis or farm shops, and graze in a selection of quality pubs, cafés and restaurants. The big-hitting historic attractions of Stonehenge and Avebury are close by too. One last thing: please note that there are no showers at this campsite.

Liked: Absolutely beautiful place, plenty of space. Lots of wildlife running around your feet. Easy ish walk into Marlborough through the woodland down the hill into town. Lovely people running the site.

Disliked: I can’t find any dislikes but if I had to list somthing it is : No taxis local really not that it is the sites fault but bit of a walk back up the hill if you go into town. Luckily a local gentleman took us back up the hill. No showers either however it was stated and beggars can’t be choosers.

Liked: Perfect for direct access to Savernake Forest with its magnificent ancient trees. Avebury stone circle also nearby and we loved the Beam Engines at Crofton.

Disliked: Toilet block showing its age. Clean but small, cubicles were very compact and there were no disabled facilities at all. No showers on site.

Local attractions

Time-travel back to prehistory with the world-famous standing stones at Stonehenge (35 minutes’ drive), and then have a poke around the interactive exhibitions at the smart visitor centre. Quieter but just as impressive are the sprawling neolithic stone circles at Avebury (15 minutes), which you can wander around at leisure. Move forwards to the 19th century with a guided tour of Wilton Windmill (summer only); it has a scenic picnic area with spectacular Wessex Downs views. In Pewsey Vale (both 15 minutes), walk a section of the White Horse Trail and see how many of Wiltshire’s famous chalk horses you can spot. To up the activity levels, Rockstar Climbing Centre (25 minutes) has indoor facilities for novices and experts alike. Marlborough Leisure Centre (five minutes) has an indoor pool and squash courts – both places make great options for the occasional rainy day. And if you’re holidaying with family, a day at Longleat Safari Park (an hour) should keep everyone happy, with drives through lion and tiger enclosures, lake cruises to see the gorillas and sea lion feeding sessions.
