Set in a meadow – one sitting on an old Saxon boundary, no less – in Somerset’s Mendip Hills, Slader’s Rest is a small, owner-run site between Winscombe and Axbridge. Approached by mown paths through long grass and wild flowers, each pitch is totally private and set up on a naturally flat spot in the meadow, with accommodation in spacious bell tents. The furnished five-metre tents each have a kingsize memory foam mattress, a double fold-out sofa bed, a firepit and barbecue combo, picnic table and a dedicated cooking area in the communal gazebo. Shared facilities include composting toilets and a hot shower. There’s a shop five minutes’ walk away and a pub about 15 minutes on foot. The pitches are dog friendly and the site sits at the centre of some of the best walking (and cycling) in the Mendips. The Mendip Way passes directly alongside, and the traffic-free Strawberry Line runs directly past the field through the Shute Shelve tunnel. One thing to know before you book: the eastern boundary of the site runs alongside a main road and you are likely to hear some traffic noise. This is a popular corner of Somerset with plenty of visitors to the surrounding area, although it quietens down in the evening.

Great glamping yurts with new furnishings. Guests loved the top-notch facilities like clean showers & compost toilets, plus a handy kitchen. Near National Trust woods and walkable pubs. Some traffic noise, but hosts are super friendly.

Apple bell tent

Liked A great cycle friendly Glamping site. The tent was beautifully presented and super comfortable. It kept me dry during a stormy night. It was right next the strawberry line and a beautiful national trust site. The large converted stable used for washing up/ shower made a perfect place to lock and shelter my bike. The host was extremely kind and helpful and was only a text message away. I wish there was more sites like this along cycle paths. A little gem.

Liked So much lovelier than the photos even show- fantastic facilities for glamping and lit shower block/compostable toilets. All very clean! Nothing to fault. So brilliant having a little 'kitchen space' with a provided gas stove and kettle etc. Lovely quiet site with only 2 glamping tents. Brilliant location, friendly hosts. Had no idea it's only been up and running for a few weeks until we got there :) highly recommend.

Hawthorn bell tent

Liked This is a lovely set up for those who want to go camping without having to take any kit. Everything is provided (or can be bought or hired e.g bedding, firewood) and the yurts are brand new with a very comfortable proper matress provided. The site is easy to find, opposite some beautiful National Trust woods and a choice of pubs within walking distance (the owner can provide directions). There is also an honesty self serve coffee/drinks bar which serves great coffee! We will definitley be back and would highly recommend

Disliked The site is bordered by a main road so there is some background traffic noise although it is not in any way intrusive
