View from the campsite

  • Well-maintained and peaceful campsite next to Mendip Activity Centre
  • A mile from Sandford village centre; Cheddar Gorge 15 minutes' drive
  • Family-friendly site in an area of outstanding natural beauty
Whether you're looking for snowsports in Somerset or just somewhere green and quiet to stay, pitch by the pistes at Mendip Ski Camp, a peaceful rural spot next to Mendip Activity Centre in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This spacious and friendly site welcomes families, small groups and well-behaved dogs for laidback holidays on its green and grassy field. The site is easily accessible but secluded, with a wide range of adventurous activities and local amenities within a short walk. Facilities here include a cabin with hot showers and toilets; campfires and barbecues are permitted too. As well as the dry ski slope next door, the on-site activity centre organises watersports, archery, frisbee golf and abseiling (book in advance via the centre's website), while a mile away in Sandford village centre you have access to a pub, a kids' playground, footpaths and Thatchers Cider Farm. This is a scenic location with nearby woodlands and plenty of wildlife to spot, including deer, foxes and buzzards. Nearby walks of note include the Strawberry Line, the Mendip Way and strolls around Cheddar Gorge, while for coastal capers Weston-super-Mare and the Somerset coast are half an hour away by road.

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked Quiet site with only three of us camping. Meant my dog didn't need to be on lead all the time
Showers loos and washing up basic in a wooden shed but functional and has hot water.
Field on a slope I wasn't worried but could be an issue for some

Disliked The site is open and during the afternoon a car came in and drove around the top field with loud music Made me very nervous of leaving my van unattended and I felt I needed to lock myself in overnight

WiFi only came on when Phil arrived at 7pm and wiggled the box. I was told it's common for people to struggle and that it was user error

There is no reception on arrival which meant I was unsure which of the two fields to park in and indeed if the second one was available. It was only after Phil eventually replied to email that I understood both available but WiFi only an option in first one

Tried to call on arrival and no reply or call back

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re sorry to hear that your experience didn’t fully meet your expectations, though we’d like to take the opportunity to clarify a few things for future guests.

Our site is indeed peaceful and quiet with the added flexibility of being able to visit the activity centre next door when looking for things to do. Many of our guests choose us specifically for the peaceful nature of our location, appreciating the balance of tranquility and nearby opportunities for adventure.

We also take security very seriously. Gaining access to the site requires going through two sets of gates, providing a secure environment for all our guests. Occasionally, a vehicle may briefly enter the site by mistake. This is rare and something that can happen at any location. However, this does not compromise the safety or security of the site in any way.

Guests are welcome to pitch in either of our two fields, depending on their preference. The first field is where most guests choose to stay, as it’s closest to the toilet block (a purpose-built wooden structure, not a shed). The layout is designed to be self-explanatory, allowing guests the flexibility to find the perfect spot without unnecessary formality.

Regarding the Wi-Fi issue – we can confirm that the correct code was provided multiple times. When Phil entered the code into your phone, the Wi-Fi connected immediately without any issues or adjustments. It does seem that the issue you had was due to an input error, which happens to the best of us from time to time.

We don’t have a formal reception area, as we aim to give our guests the freedom to settle in at their own pace. Clear signage is provided, and contact numbers are displayed prominently should anyone need assistance. We always do our best to respond quickly to any messages and as we live next door there is almost always a member of the team nearby and available if needed.

We truly value all feedback and our aim is always to provide a calm, secure, and enjoyable environment.

Clean facilities, Phil was very friendly and helpful. Will visit again

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked None

Disliked Rubbish around tents, unkept grass and surroundings.
No communication, arrived at the site and drove in. Saw mess from previous camper around tent on clean, beer cans etc.
Rang phone number on arrival and no answer and not even a call back. Ended up have to find another site to stay at and wasted £90

From the manager: Thank you for your review.

Unfortunately we did not get to see you as we did not meet you or see you on site and did not have any communication from you.

We had other families camping at the site during that time who managed to access the site and who we met on their arrival. They respected the campsite and didn’t litter the area.

I am concerned that you may have gone to the wrong site, perhaps a nearby site, as your comments do not tally with our site and we did not see you on the site.

For the benefit of any future guests - we are a clean and well kept campsite with clean shower and toilet facilities with hot water. We offer free Wi-Fi, hardstandings for campervans and motorhomes.

Simple, easy campsite, nice for a night stop over with pleasant staff

Local attractions

For après-ski with a West Country twist, head five minutes' drive down the road to Thatchers Cider Farm for orchard tours, trips to the on-site farm shop and the chance to try a good few ciders while you're at it. For an accompaniment to your drinks, head into Cheddar (15 minutes' drive), home of the selfsame cheese, where there are two delis plus a range of family-friendly pubs, restaurants and cafés. If that combination of fine food and drink leaves you feeling a bit lethargic, dust yourself off and take to the walks around Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes) for fresh air and sweeping views over the Mendip Hills, or drive a bit further afield to take on Glastonbury Tor (40 minutes) and look down to the pretty market town below. More historic buildings like those in Glastonbury are on display in Wells (30 minutes), a pint-sized city with a gorgeous cathedral deep in the Somerset countryside. There's also Bristol (40 minutes) and Bath (an hour) to visit if you fancy more urban explores, while for more countrified days out there's the top-rated Somerset Rural Life Museum (35 minutes).
