  • Large off-grid pitches at a five-acre wild campsite in Somerset
  • A 10-minute drive to Weston-super-Mare; 25 minutes to Cheddar Gorge
  • Back to basics site; kids and dogs welcome; pub 15 minutes' walk
If you’ve ever fancied wild camping but aren’t sure how the landowner consent thing works (and/or, truth be told, you do quite like having a toilet on hand), here’s an excellent option for you. On the edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape and less than a mile from the Somerset village of Bleadon is Hemingway’s Field, a place that’s been set up to give guests that peaceful feeling of wild camping – with the reassurance that you’re doing it all legally. Book in here and you’ll be staying at an off-grid five-acre site with just a small handful of pitches in a private field. Each pitch is pretty huge and in its own fenced area, so you won’t be jumbled in with other groups – in fact, you may well not even notice they’re there. Each pitch takes up to 10 guests, so you can bring along a gang of pals for a sociable getaway or keep all that wonderful space to yourself for a glorious solo break. Kids and dogs are welcome, and they can roam around freely as the field is safely fenced. Guests can also explore an acre of private woodland and get out on walks straight from the gate (a farm shop, café, playground and two pubs are within 20 minutes’ stroll…). A compost toilet is provided for your convenience; other than that, it’s all up to you. You’re welcome to set up gazebos and awnings for a bit of shelter while you enjoy the peace, soak up the views of Bleadon Hill or spend the evening stargazing in this mercifully light pollution-free location.

Local attractions

The views from the site are pretty lovely, and will no doubt inspire you to get out to see more of your gorgeous Somerset surroundings. Exploring on foot or bike is a top option around here, perhaps heading to Crook Peak (10 minutes’ drive) for a ridge walk or following the Strawberry Line path for a traffic-free walk or cycle along a former railway line from Yatton (half an hour). Or maybe you’d like to head to the coast – Weston-super-Mare (10 minutes) is always a popular option, with a sandy beach and plenty of amusements for all ages. Brean and Berrow (both 15 minutes) are also worth visiting, or you could head to a wilder stretch like the wildlife-filled WWT Steart Marshes (40 minutes). For other days out, admire the excellent geology of Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes) and Wookey Hole (40 minutes) or explore the city attractions of Wells (40 minutes) and Bristol (50 minutes).
