General

  • Nearly-wild camping on an organic farm with spectacular views
  • Within the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Pick your own pitch; barbecues permitted on site

Cothelstone Estate is a quiet site in peaceful surroundings in an elevated spot within the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with far-reaching views over the local landscape and easy access to walking and mountain biking trails. Located within an area of outstanding natural beauty, it's also within about a 20-minute drive of Exmoor National Park and the west Somerset coast.

This family-friendly campsite is located between Lydeard Hill and Cothelstone Hill, with off-road trails to get you to both. These spots are great gateways to the wider Quantocks area, which has over 7,000 acres of open access land to explore – bring your walking boots along to get out onto the scenic trails around the site.

The nearest sizeable village is West Bagborough, roughly a mile away, while nearby Bishop's Lydeard (10 minutes' drive) has two pubs, a brewery, a Chinese takeaway, tea rooms, a farm shop and a supermarket.

Barbecues are welcome at Cothelstone Estate, but to protect the grass they need to be well raised off the ground at all times. The site's staff can also supply guests with a small number of barbecues for a small fee if you haven't brought your own (the cost includes locally-burnt charcoal).

Really basic, really beautiful, really quiet. Absolutely perfect. Really good communication from the owner. I was worried about the toilet facilities but I needn't have been as they we were really good. Didn't smell at all and are obviously really well looked after. We will most definitely be using this campsite again.

Fantastic location and views. Easy to find and access in a large HGV expedition truck. There is water available from a tap, and if you need them, lavatories.

Would highly recommend this site and although its quite undulating, there is enough flat ground to use. If you go in a motorhome, then make sure you have levelling ramps.

Surrounded by woodland and had visits from Deer, Pheasant, and innumerable birds including a large owl.

Large enough to feel completely alone and wild.

The owner was extremely helpful and welcoming and response to any queries were answered quickly.

A great place for a break.

We loved our stay at the Cothelstone. The field is big and we were able to find space with a clear view, no tents or caravan in front of us and we had a feeling we are there alone. The view was amazing even though the bad weather.
There was a cut grass road that takes you around the field.
The toilets were clean, with clear instructions how to use the composting toilet.
I had a request for the owner and she was really quick to respond to my text. Great walking trails in the area.

We loved the pristine grass and wildflower meadow, the spaciousness, care and attention put into little details, the hassle free, quiet, easy nature of the site. People were quiet and respectful, the views were amazing, the location quiet and unspoilt. Near to delightful walks or a short drive to Kilve and the sea. So lovely to find such a gem, just the rest and ease we needed.
