  • Rural glamping site by Wimbleball Lake, in Exmoor National Park
  • Watersports a 10-minute walk away; Dunster Castle 25 minutes' drive
  • Firepits, woodburning stoves and barbecues provided
Sitting on the banks of Wimbleball Lake, a five-minute drive from the Somerset village of Brompton Regis, Rosie and Albert’s Exmoor Escape certainly delivers on the ‘escape’ front. This rural glamping site feels peaceful and remote, with far-reaching views across the gentle hills of Exmoor National Park. How cosy are the accommodations here? The short answer is 'very'. You’ll be sleeping on plush kingsize beds, and there are woodburning stoves to keep the chill of those country evenings at bay. In the evening, you can gather around the firepit, glass of wine in hand, and whip up a quick barbecue (local produce is available from the village shop). The area is a designated Dark Sky Reserve, and you won’t want to miss the spectacle of myriad stars twinkling away as night falls. But don’t stay up too late, because (at least once) you’ll also want to catch the sunrise over the lake, accompanied by the dawn chorus. It’s not just about sunrise and sunset, though, since there’s also plenty to do in between. Wimbleball Lake Activity Centre (10 minutes’ walk) has kayaks and paddleboards for hire, as well as instructors to guide you through the basics of several watersports. And of course, Exmoor National Park is laced with walking and cycling trails, and you might even catch a glimpse of the resident red deer or ponies. In addition to a toilet block and hot gas showers, the site has a communal fridge/freezer and a washing-up area. However, when it comes to dining, you might prefer to take the short walk into Brompton Regis and have a traditional meal at the village pub.

Local attractions

You can observe lemurs and hedgehogs as they go about their business in the Nocturnal House at Tropiquaria Wildlife Park (15 minutes’ drive). Other residents include otters, free-roaming birds and reptiles (don't worry: the latter are not free-roaming). A former fortress (as revealed by the ruins of the imposing tower), Dunster Castle and Watermill (25 minutes) is now an elegant country home and a National Trust property. After taking in the sea views, you can stroll among the Mediterranean and subtropical plants in the elegant terraced garden, then buy a bag of wholemeal flour ground at the on-site windmill. If you’re into fossil hunting, sandy Blue Anchor Beach (25 minutes), on the Bristol Channel, might yield a few treasures. From here, you can also catch a steam train and ride the West Somerset Railway to Watchet, where you can relax with fish and chips overlooking the harbour.
