  • Glamping in a characterful and fun submarine in Somerset
  • A mile from Cheddar; 25 minutes' drive to the nearest beach
  • Kitchen and barbecue included; food shack and ice creams on site
Best get your vocal cords warmed up… because there is no way you'll be able to resist singing that song when you’re en route to The Yellow Submarine (and probably throughout your stay too). This is a special spot indeed for a glamping stay. Yes indeed, it's a real-life yellow submarine. And yes indeed, it's got all the bits and bobs you'd expect inside – budding underwater adventurers can press buttons, check dials and gauges and look out of real portholes and periscope. Naturally, there’s a giant octopus detector, a shark warning system and a radar system to help you keep an eye on what's going on outside. In reality, what's going on outside is a glorious Somerset campsite with a cool free-range vibe and some fab facilities including a food shack (with breakfast rolls, loaded fries, paninis and the like as well as milkshakes and proper coffee. A kids' activity field has all sorts of things to clamber over (tractor tyres, sleepers and an old Land Rover among them) and there’s a shop at reception for various essentials. ‘Kev the ice man' sells local sweet treats throughout the summer, and you can pick up stone-baked pizzas on Friday evenings in high season too. The site is just over a mile from the centre of Cheddar, which has some great takeaways, pubs and places to eat. There are also farm shops and supermarkets close by so you can pick up supplies for the kitchen back at the sub (which has a hob, fridge and all the other bits you'll need) or for the barbecue/firepit outside.

Local attractions

Cheddar (a mile away) is primarily known for two things: its excellent cheese and its equally excellent gorge. Both are easy to explore by bike, by car or on foot – stop by at the Original Cheddar Cheese Co on your way to Cheddar Gorge and Caves (five minutes' drive). And for more of the area’s impressive geology, plan a visit to Wookey Hole (15 minutes) as well. The coastline is well worth visiting around here too – local beaches include Weston-super-Mare, Brean and Burnham-on-Sea (all within a half-hour drive). If you fancy some countryside wanders instead, it's handy to know that you're just on the edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape; for city time, try tiny Wells (20 minutes) or buzzy Bristol (40 minutes). Other days out? How about meeting the exotic beasts at Chew Valley Animal Park (half an hour), swapping your sub for flying machines at The Helicopter Museum (25 minutes) or heading to Puxton Park (20 minutes) for zipwires, soft play and animal encounters?
