  • Scenic countryside glampsite on an Isle of Purbeck working farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Swanage and 20 minutes from Studland beaches
  • Barbecue hire, campfire bowls and high-season mobile shop
For scenic and pastoral stays with a hint of luxury, opt for hols at Andrea’s Farm Breaks, a family-friendly glampsite on the working Downshay Farm, about 15 minutes’ drive (four miles) from the seaside town of Swanage in Dorset. On the Isle of Purbeck peninsula, and within easy reach of the Studland nature reserve (20 minutes) and the famed Jurassic Coast (15 minutes), the site is well placed for explores that touch on history and spectacular scenery. No need to go far to experience the latter though, as views of Corfe Castle and the pretty Purbeck hills can be had from site. Those who do opt for wandering off site can still keep getaways low-key and slow-paced. It’s a 10-minute walk from base to the Harmans Cross stop of the Swanage Steam Railway – discounted tickets can be bought on site – and lazy beach days are between 15 and 20 minutes’ drive away at Swanage and Studland Bay. Cosy evenings by the fire are a must here, and each unit is provided with a dedicated area for barbecues and picnics, as well as a campfire bowl for toasty outdoor nights. A pack of logs, kindling, charcoal and firelighters is provided on arrival and additional wood can be purchased at the local shop. Barbecues can be hired on site for outdoor eats to satisfy hungers and, during high season and over bank holiday weekends, a mobile shop selling essentials sets up on site.

Local attractions

Don’t spend hols just looking at Corfe Castle – it’s only five minutes’ drive from base to clamber about the crumbling millennium-old ruin that’s one of the UK’s best survivors of the English Civil War. Historical curiosity piqued? It’ll be easily satisfied with stops at the Purbeck Mineral and Mining Museum (10 minutes), Durlston Castle and Country Park (20 minutes), Clavell Tower and Lulworth Castle (both about 25 minutes away), and Upton Country Park (30 minutes). For history with a Hollywood angle, the site’s also within 25 minutes of Clouds Hill, the modest home of TE Lawrence, who’s perhaps better known as Lawrence of Arabia. Days among animals are within easy reach of base too: it’s 20 minutes to birdwatching at RSPB Arne, and 25 minutes to both Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre and Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park. Time spent in urban centres can handily be confined to Swanage explores (15 minutes), with plenty of shops to sort souvenirs in, as well as bars and restaurants, golf, a pier and indoor amusements.
