  • Simple stays on a grassy field in a rural valley with a firepit
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from West Bay
  • On a National Cycle Route and 20 minutes’ walk to the local pub
The folk at Charside Camping reckon they’ve got everything you need for a camping trip as it used to be – that’s a field, a tap and a loo – and when you factor in the roomy three acres of space surrounded by stunning rural landscapes here, it seems they’re pretty correct. Huddle up under the boughs of an oak tree at this dog-friendly site, for a hol next to the Char river, which flows through the pitching field. The sheep that graze the grounds most of the year around head off for a month in July, allowing guests to move in for that month only to explore the scenic Jurassic Coast from a lovely location. There’s no clubhouse or suchlike to distract you from your adventuring here, but a firepit’s available for evenings of chats beside the flames. Logs are on sale at the park to keep the blaze burning, and other essentials (yes, marshmallows count) can be picked up in the busy Dorset market town of Bridport, 10 minutes’ drive away. A handy tourist information office doling out top tips is in this spot; chat with staff about family-friendly attractions in the local area or make your way towards the sea and access the Jurassic Coast from several scenic points nearby (like West Bay, Golden Cap, Charmouth and Lyme Regis, all under 25 minutes away). For lush lunches and dinners, many of these spots have pubs and restaurants; closer to the site are the eats served at the local pub (five minutes by bike on the National Cycle Route that runs right past the park’s gate or 20 minutes’ walk).

Local attractions

Once you’re done with idling by the Char, embark on an intrepid investigation of the Jurassic Coast. Sweet seaside towns like Lyme Regis, 25 minutes’ drive away, are stellar spots to stroll around – this place isn’t called ‘The Pearl of Dorset’ for nothing – or you could head off and hunt for fossils at Charmouth (20 minutes). Golden Cap is another coastal cracker to seek out for cliffside views from the highest point on Britain’s south coast (get set for a good muscle workout if you're climbing it…), while West Bay’s a prime spot for paddling on the beach or launching canoe trips from the harbour (both 20 minutes). Done with the seaside? Switch things up a little with a visit to the rescued beasts of burden at The Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth (40 minutes), or stick a little closer to home with a historical trip to the working 17th-century Mangerton Mill (15 minutes).
