  • Family-friendly site on the edge of the Isle of Purbeck
  • A five-minute drive to Corfe Castle; 15 minutes to the Jurassic coast
  • Playground; on-site shop with takeaway hot food from 7am until 2pm
From castle ruins and fun parks to the Jurassic coast’s cliffsides, coves and coastal path, you'll be able to crack open the Jurassic coast and the Dorset countryside from The Lookout Holiday. At the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck with Blue Pool and Corfe Castle five minutes’ drive away, this site is also 15 minutes from Dancing Ledge and the South West Coast Path. It may be party time when it comes to everything coastal from here, but it’s easy to unwind on site too… and it’s a properly family-friendly place, as the site has a large children’s playground – slides and climbing frames galore – for kids to let off steam. To get your hands on those essential bits, there’s a shop on-site. It runs takeaway hot food too, served between 7am until 2pm for those early starts or midday tummy grumbles. Other facilities include an amenities block with showers and toilets and laundry facilities in case you end up a little mucky from your adventures. It may be that you want to leave your car behind. If so, the site is on a bus route and the nearest train station is in Wareham, three miles away. While Swanage and Studland are both around 20 minutes’ drive away for a deep dive into the local cuisine, the site’s local pub is just 15 minutes’ walk away.

Local attractions

The coast might be the first thing on your to-do list. If so, you’ll want to weigh up where to jet off to first. Perhaps Dancing Ledge (15 minutes’ drive), a classic Jurassic Coast landmark once a favourite for smugglers and now a nice spot for walking, climbing or wildlife spotting? Or to tick off coves, cliffs and crazy views along the South West Coast Path (15 minutes)? Blue Pool (five minutes) may sound beach-like, but it’s actually a nature reserve with a nice assortment of trails and a tearoom to replenish your energy afterwards. Woodland trails and farm animals are all the craze at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (15 minutes) instead, while at Monkey World (10 minutes), you’ll get to peep in on rescued apes to see how they’re getting along. Now for the historic trips, Corfe Castle (five minutes) is one place for the itinerary. The National Trust castle has been everything from a Norman fortress to a royal palace and family home, so there’s a lot to learn about there. Similar can be said for the huge tank collection at The Tank Museum (15 minutes).

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Clean and well laid out pitches. Very flat. Clean and warm facilities. Friendly staff. Walking distance to village with lots of interesting shops and cafes. Lots to do within a short distance.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: The only site in the area open and accepting tents. B-Field for tents and campers was deserted and toilet block closed. There's was another toilet block nearby, warm and clean. Walking distance to Wareham (along the road on pavement or path via fields), short drive to Swanage, Corfe Castle, Durdle Door. I'm already familiar with the area, so knew what I want to do and where to go.

Disliked: Noise from the road on B-field. There's roundabout nearby and people accelerate after leaving it. Also, some boy races in loud cars. However, in full season, you will probably hear all your neighbours and not the road.
