  • Family-friendly farm campsite overlooking the Purbeck Hills
  • Swanage, Studland and Durdle Door all within a 20-minute drive
  • A mile's walk from Wareham town centre
Off to Dorset in search of scenic views? A stay at Purbeck View Campsite should fit the bill nicely, surrounded as it is by the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and with views over the Frome Valley and (yes indeed) the Purbeck Hills beyond. The simple pitches here are part of a working family farm, so those vistas may be boosted by sightings of cattle grazing in the fields too. It’s a family-friendly setup here. Toilets, portable toilets and outdoor showers will be available. This is a fab location for a Dorset holiday getting out and about around the Isle of Purbeck and Jurassic Coast – popular attractions including Corfe Castle, Monkey World, The Tank Museum and Durdle Door are all within a 20-minute drive, as are the beaches at Swanage, Studland and Lulworth Cove. Gadding about on public transport is an option too as there are bus stops a mile away in Wareham. The centre of Wareham (about a 20-minute stroll away) is also a handy place to source your food: it’s got a couple of small supermarkets, several pubs, restaurants, shops and a variety of takeaways to pick from. Just to the north of the town is a train station that’s linked to the main rail network and the Swanage Railway for steaming down to the seaside in style.

Local attractions

Beach time is a must when staying this close to the coast. Sandy Swanage beach (20 minutes’ drive) is a good bet for a family day out, with deckchairs, pedalos and loungers to hire and amusements for the kids. Wilder Studland (also 20 minutes) has a backdrop of heath and dunes along much of its four-mile stretch, and a naturist section for those seeking an all-over tan. Down on the Jurassic Coast, top spots like Lulworth Cove, the famed stone arch Durdle Door and fossil-hunting hotspot Kimmeridge are all within a 20-minute drive, and it’s half an hour to Weymouth. To explore a bit more of the area’s natural habitat, aim for Wareham Forest or the RSPB Arne nature reserve (both 10 minutes); not at all native but still providing much fun are the apes of Monkey World (10 minutes). Serve up a bit of history alongside with outings to the ruins of Corfe Castle (five minutes) and the collection of armoured vehicles at The Tank Museum (10 minutes).

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: A well thought out pop up site, managed by a lovely, friendly couple - Ian and Becky - keen to share their local intelligence and make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Set in a large field, with numbers kept low so plenty/loads of space and all very peaceful. Lovely views.

Facilities (showers, loos, washing up) were clean and well stocked with soap, washing up liquid, sponges and loo roll etc).

We really enjoyed the fire-pit one evening, and our walk into Wareham for a pub meal the other.

Disliked: Only our neighbours who kept their cars running for long periods in the morning (we assume to charge phones) - but no fault of the campsite owners

Liked: Shower and toilets were clean at all times. Washing up area with washing up liquid and sponges provided. Drinking water taps. Flat pitches and plenty of space. Little shop for essentials. Charging station for devices. Fire pit hire. Very quiet at night (apart from the road but that’s a minor issue). Very friendly owners who were helpful and with a great knowledge of the local area.

Disliked: Road noise, but didn’t affect our stay. The grass could have been shorter.

Liked: Friendly host and great location. The field is big enough to give you the possibility to choose any location you prefer. Good pop up camping

Disliked: Grass wasn't cut and the shower wasn't great: warm water and great pressure but the shower head pattern was bizzare

Liked: We liked the relaxed feel of the campsite and the lovely views. The pitches were generous and we had plenty of space. It was great to be able to have a fire pit in the evenings and watch the sunrise over the hills in the morning.

There was an easy walk into town and to nearby tourist spots (Corfe Castle, Swanage, Old Harry Rocks etc). We also hired a canoe and took it along the river in the local town (an easy walk from the campsite).

Disliked: The shower facilities were pretty basic. It was hard to find a place to stand under the shower head where you could get a good flow of water running over you which made for a chilly experience!

The toilets facilities were also basic but decent. The washing-up facilities were great but not sheltered in any way so it was a bit wet when raining!

The campsite could benefit from a more obvious sign at the entrance to the camp. We drove past the entrance a couple of times before we found the track.
