Stay with the alpacas
The alpacas
Barry bell tent exterior

  • Eco off-grid farm stay on the Jurassic Coast
  • Beaches five minutes’ drive; Dorchester 20 minutes
  • Smallholding with alpacas and goats; animal meet-and-greets available
Have alpacas and goats ever featured in your holiday plans? Well, now they can, for Flowerdew Farm is an eco-friendly, off-grid site in Dorset's scenic Bride Valley, on a peaceful alpaca and goat smallholding. Guests at this relaxed, community-oriented site get to stay beside the animals and sign up for meet and greet sessions with the animals, as well as wellbeing workshops. As the place is run on sustainable lines, eco facilities include composting toilets, a hot shower, wifi and a covered rest area. For safety reasons, you'll also need to raise any barbecues or firepits off the ground (firepit rental is available), and the owners ask that you buy their clean-burning logs rather than bring your own. If there’s a weather warning, drought or fire ban, barbecuing will be put on hold. A village pub in Puncknowle village is just a 10-minute walk away for those days when you don't feel like cooking. It's also a short walk to the nearest Jurassic Coaster bus stop, so getting out to the coast for walks, fish and chips and beaches (including Hive, Chesil, Cogden and West Bay) is nice and easy. Also accessible by Jurassic Coaster, Bridport has arts, antiques and markets, and Weymouth has sandy beaches and a lively harbour. The options feel almost endless: in under half an hour's drive, you could also reach Dorchester Maiden Castle, Golden Cap or Symondsbury. The camping fields are car-free zones, and wheelbarrows are on hand for lugging your gear to your pitch. If you’re exploring locally and don’t want to use the car, e-bikes are available for hire.

What customers say

Flowerdew Farm earns praise for its friendly, eco-conscious vibe, lovely country setting, and welcoming host, Claire. Guests loved the alpacas and goats, the communal barn with games/charging, and the peaceful feel. Facilities were mostly clean and fine, though toilets/showers could be better when busy. Handy for local sights and the coast.

Barry bell tent (four person, comfort)

Liked Clare was a great host and very welcoming. Animal experience was great and Clare very engaging with children. Beautiful views from the campsite with friendly atmosphere. Animals really well looked after.

Disliked It would be useful to include a two ring camping stove as part of the mini campers kitchen for bell tents for when BBQ’s are not possible due to heat.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Simplicity, friendliness, price and location to beaches while away from main roads.

Disliked Smell and flies got a bit much at times. Facilities were fine in dry weather but wouldn’t fancy them in the rain.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked You can see how much work and love has gone into Flowerdew Farm. The owner lives its values onsite and open to feedback. It is also ideally situated for some lovely beaches, pubs and villages. As the camping area is quite small, it feels safe and inclusive.

Disliked The toilet/sink/shower area needs a little work but I can see from previous comments from Claire, that she knows and has plans.

Liked Relaxed friendly site. Owner very helpful and on site, easy to reach. Fridge freezer for common use helpful. Nice indoor seating area for campers and outdoor benches. Alpacas and goats nice feature and clearly well looked after. Compost toilet kept really clean and portaloos are being upgraded so owner responsive to feedback. Close to coast by bike or car.

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked The host was very friendly, the location was quiet.

Disliked Smelly as right next door to a cattle farm. Lots of flies. Toilet was minging. Shower head sprayed everywhere except on you. Shower cubicle needed cleaning. Hand washing station was washing up station. Whilst we understand the desire to be eco- friendly this is just squalid. Also wifi did not work.

Local attractions

Local walks start right at your pitch, or you can join the South West Coast Path at Hive Beach (five minutes’ drive) for some serious clifftop yomps with spectacular views along the Jurassic Coast clifftops. Get out for bracing walks along Chesil Beach from West Bexington, admire the colourful wild flowers backing Cogden beach (both five minutes), or go fossil-hunting in West Bay (10 minutes). If your kids (and indeed you) enjoyed making friends with the livestock at Flowerdew Farm, they’d probably also love to say ‘hi’ to the donkeys, reindeers and emus at Vurlands Animal Farm (five minutes). To watch turtles, sharks and rays flit around aquariums instead, head for Sea Life Centre Weymouth (half an hour). For town time, Weymouth (25 minutes) is a pretty Georgian-era seaside town packed with historic pubs and with a yachting harbour to stroll around; lively Bridport (10 minutes) is known for its seafood dining scene and antiques quarter, and Dorchester (20 minutes) is Dorset’s capital of culture, with lots of sights associated with the famed local-born author Thomas Hardy.
