  • Dog-friendly, adults-only couples’ country retreat in rural Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Charmouth and 15 to Lyme Regis and West Bay
  • Walking paths to the beach from the site; pub a five-minute stroll
Whether your pastime is active or more laidback, Hobby Farm in Marshwood Vale has you covered. Like a bit of walking? Set in the Dorset National Landscape, this site’s got that in spades. Prefer relaxing? As a small adults-only site with a low-key atmosphere where guests are encouraged to be respectful of one another, the place is kept nice and peaceful too… The site’s also a 10-minute drive to the famous fossil beach in Charmouth (for hunting dino remains) and footpaths connecting to the coast from here mean you can roam on down through the green countryside in about an hour and a quarter. If Fido fancies a break, you can bring him as well: dogs are welcome at Hobby Farm. For beaches with a bit of bustle, West Bay and Lyme Regis’ restaurants, bars and boutiques are less than a 10-minute drive away, and if guests are hankering after eats closer by a pub serving grub is about a five-minute walk up the lane. A supermarket is less than a 15-minute drive away for supplies if you're aiming for alfresco cooking (and barbecues are allowed back on base). If legs still have a little life left in them, Stonebarrow Hill (a 10-minute drive) has 25 miles’ worth of trails around Golden Cap. Factor in a stop uphill for vistas of Lyme Bay over to Dartmoor, then keep going to Langdon Hill-Wood via Smugglers’ Trail. Or carry yourself off towards the cliffs for the old Thorncombe Beacon and views of Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of England’s longest shingle shorelines.

What customers say

A peaceful adults-only spot with great views. Facilities are clean, with hot water and a communal fridge. Pitches are private. Enjoy the quiet, though farm noise happens. Narrow lanes for big vehicles. Fire pits and wood available.

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Setting 10 out of 10. Really like the added bench, made meal prep and eating much more enjoyable.
Very peaceful apart from some youngsters still parting at 3am.
Just our bad luck, as everything else was perfect.

Disliked Could not master the showers. Either too hot or too cold

Liked Clearly marked out pitches surrounded by hedges and some with fire pits and picnic benches. Lovely views and nice walks from the site. Free WiFi.

Disliked Some pitches are better than others. They charge an extra £2 for each dog - why?

Liked We had a wonderful stay at Hobby Farm, deep in the countryside yet not far from the coast. Toilets and showers are exceptionally clean and I love each little pitch sectioned off with wild hedging. Views are stunning and the sunsets are magnificent! There’s loads of walks from site or you can sit and listen to the owls, sheep etc or watch the swallows feed their chicks in the roof above the washing up area. Peaceful and relaxing stay and we will definitely return.

Disliked Wifi was a bit iffy when the site was full although I had some 4G so not a major issue.

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked I really liked this campsite. It is small, clean and in a beautiful setting. The showering and loo facilities were good.

Disliked Everything was great. A hook on the loo door would be handy, if I had to be picky and find a suggestion.

Liked Peaceful, back to basics adults only campsite with all the facilities you could need, and kept nice and clean! Have stayed before and will be back again in the future I am sure!

Slight issue with no hot water in evening, but I text the owners and they got back to me quickly were soon down and had the water going again for a nice evening shower!

Lovely sunset as well, the view is especially enjoyable from one of the pitches at the back of the site!

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Very pretty site, pond looks lovely on a sunny day

Disliked As you arrive you'll see a noticeboard with bits of info and a mobile phone number to text with questions or queries, we had a question so text this number but no one ever replied, bit pointless to display the number if no one replies to questions. There was a group of around 6 males staying in one pitch together, they were mainly respectful but took over the grass in the middle of the field playing football which entered a few people's pitches, not exactly peaceful as we expected. Hot water was non existent one day, we couldn't have a shower because it was very cold, couldn't wash our dishes either so went back to the van and boiled a kettle, another camper commented about there rarely being hot water. I didnt bother contacting the campsite about the lack of hot water because we'd already being waiting over 24 hours to a reply to the last text message that id sent.

Route directions

Coming along Blunts Road from Ryall, pass Hobby Farm (the equestrian stables) and look for the next turning on the right to find the site. It's better to use the Google Maps location for Hobby Farm Holidays to find the exact spot rather than using the postcode. If coming from the A303 and Crewkerne, after Bettiscombe, your satnav may suggest going down a bridleway to Mandeville Stoke Farm. Don't take this turning but carry straight on instead.

Local attractions

Book as much time as you can off work, as this area’s brimming with things to do. Quirky times can be had at Lyme Regis’ crazy golf course on the promenade, while boat trips are available from West Bay to see beaches from a watery vantage point. Meanwhile, museums like Dinosaurland Fossil (15 minutes' drive) will school you on what puts the Jurassic into the Jurassic Coast. For country houses with a twist, former Cistercian monastery Forde Abbey is a 20-minute drive or you can journey an hour into the countryside past Yeovil for Sherborne Castle. Car enthusiasts can have a gander at the Haynes Motor Museum near this 16th-century Tudor mansion, some 50 minutes from Hobby Farm. Back towards the coast, town times are top in Sidmouth, 40 minutes east by car, with its Regency houses, botanical gardens and donkey sanctuary. Heading in the other direction will take you to the Hardy Monument on Black Down within 35 minutes for views of the West Dorset Heritage Coast from way up high.
