  • Dog-friendly, adults-only couples’ country retreat in rural Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Charmouth and 15 to Lyme Regis and West Bay
  • Walking paths to the beach from the site; pub a five-minute stroll
Whether your pastime is active or more laidback, Hobby Farm in Marshwood Vale has you covered. Like a bit of walking? Set in the Dorset National Landscape, this site’s got that in spades. Prefer relaxing? As a small adults-only site with a low-key atmosphere where guests are encouraged to be respectful of one another, the place is kept nice and peaceful too… The site’s also a 10-minute drive to the famous fossil beach in Charmouth (for hunting dino remains) and footpaths connecting to the coast from here mean you can roam on down through the green countryside in about an hour and a quarter. If Fido fancies a break, you can bring him as well: dogs are welcome at Hobby Farm. For beaches with a bit of bustle, West Bay and Lyme Regis’ restaurants, bars and boutiques are less than a 10-minute drive away, and if guests are hankering after eats closer by a pub serving grub is about a five-minute walk up the lane. A supermarket is less than a 15-minute drive away for supplies if you're aiming for alfresco cooking (and barbecues are allowed back on base). If legs still have a little life left in them, Stonebarrow Hill (a 10-minute drive) has 25 miles’ worth of trails around Golden Cap. Factor in a stop uphill for vistas of Lyme Bay over to Dartmoor, then keep going to Langdon Hill-Wood via Smugglers’ Trail. Or carry yourself off towards the cliffs for the old Thorncombe Beacon and views of Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of England’s longest shingle shorelines.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked As close as you can get to wild camping but with the facilities to go with it .
Private pitches with shade options good size as well , picnic bench and fire pit with each pitch .
I like the pre check in and choose your own pitch this is as I see it on a first come first serve basis but all the pitches are good .
Has everything you need including large fridge washing up area and good working showers and toilets.
Near the local pub which is very nice .
Great views too and is a quiet place to be able to relax as you have lots of distance between your neighbours

Disliked Nothing this is a lovely little farm camp in a very nice area

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked A lovely quiet site with generous size pitches and a great view. Amazing to have access to such a large fridge freezer.
Great for wildlife- listened to owls, peacocks and swallows.

Disliked The toilets ran out of toilet roll and hand soap for a while but this was restocked when the owners were made aware.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Loved the large pitches to choose from. The views are just stunning! Loved the company of the horses roaming in the fields. Freezer was a great addition 👍

Disliked Not very keen on the company of spiders in the showers/loos. Can cope in the daylight with them but at night they came out and spooked the hell out of me!!!! Our grass pitch was very over grown but not a huge problem....had to trim down around our door entrances the scissors.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Its an amazing place, the peace and quite, dog friendly, fridge/freezer space and overall loveliness. This is the second time we've visited in a matter of weeks and thoroughly enjoy it. Adult only makes such a difference but this site has that extra quiet we all need sometimes. Would highly recommend. 100% will be revisiting! 😍 ive given the wifi a 3 because its not good service but we aren't bothered about wifi when we're camping! I also gave the cleanliness an 8 as the paper towels, toilet rolls and hand wash could of been topped up more regularly but thats a small grumble for what this place offers. There is also a number on the white board which you can call if you need any one or info. Otherwise absolutely gorgeous! 😍

Disliked Nothing.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Our perfect type of site. Spacious pitches all round a big field, mostly fairly private with dividing shrubbery. lovely and quiet with countryside views. Big pond/lake in next field which we enjoyed sitting and watching the ducks and birds. The toilets and showers are excellent, three of each. Couldn’t wish for anything better!
A personal suggestion regarding the possible routes from the A35 to the site. The two obvious options are Star Lane opposite Felicity’s Farm shop or Tizards Knap close to Artwave West art gallery. The latter goes through the village of Whitchurch Canonicorum, and has lots of wider sections and passing places. The former is very narrow all the way, about two miles, and has very few passing places.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked This is a lovely campsite, so quiet and relaxing. We had a great weekend stay with walking and relaxing. The campsite is clean and the services are simple but perfect. My only comments would be the wifi really doesn’t work (not a problem for at all) and the footpath to the walk to golden cap needs chopping back as it’s really over grown. Otherwise nothing negative to add and these two things are just minor. All in all a great campsite.

Route directions

Coming along Blunts Road from Ryall, pass Hobby Farm (the equestrian stables) and look for the next turning on the right to find the site. It's better to use the Google Maps location for Hobby Farm Holidays to find the exact spot rather than using the postcode. If coming from the A303 and Crewkerne, after Bettiscombe, your satnav may suggest going down a bridleway to Mandeville Stoke Farm. Don't take this turning but carry straight on instead.

Local attractions

Book as much time as you can off work, as this area’s brimming with things to do. Quirky times can be had at Lyme Regis’ crazy golf course on the promenade, while boat trips are available from West Bay to see beaches from a watery vantage point. Meanwhile, museums like Dinosaurland Fossil (15 minutes' drive) will school you on what puts the Jurassic into the Jurassic Coast. For country houses with a twist, former Cistercian monastery Forde Abbey is a 20-minute drive or you can journey an hour into the countryside past Yeovil for Sherborne Castle. Car enthusiasts can have a gander at the Haynes Motor Museum near this 16th-century Tudor mansion, some 50 minutes from Hobby Farm. Back towards the coast, town times are top in Sidmouth, 40 minutes east by car, with its Regency houses, botanical gardens and donkey sanctuary. Heading in the other direction will take you to the Hardy Monument on Black Down within 35 minutes for views of the West Dorset Heritage Coast from way up high.
