  • Well-maintained park on the banks of the river Tamar
  • A 10-minute drive from Tavistock; 35 minutes from Plymouth
  • Local pub, shop and restaurant in the village
Take a spot at Tamar Valley site Morwellham Quay and you'll get to stay in a place where gorgeous river views and all sorts of easy outings come together for all-round smashing Devon hols. If you're eyeing a break in this leafy part of Devon, you'll probably be interested in getting out into the surrounding country by bike or on foot (perhaps with a dog trotting along behind). All manner of hikes and two-wheeled jaunts can be organised here, whether you opt for riverside rambles or the footpaths that crisscross the countryside adjacent to the park. Need a restorative tipple pre- and/or post-walk? This site's friendly village pub may very well help you on your merry way… and there's a play area to cater for nippers who've still got a bit of energy to burn while you sip. Salty sea dogs heading for the Devon or Cornwall coast can also plant their flag here: once a working port, Morwellham Quay is a breezy 35 minutes from Plymouth and 45 minutes from Looe. Riverside explores are also on the cards: here you can bring your rod and fish in the Tamar, with several spots to hire kayaks and canoes nearby. Guests at Morwellham Quay can access the soft play area for under 12s for free, but the mine train will require an extra fee.

Unpowered grass and gravel tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Travelled with 13yo daughter. Location is scenic and quirky as part of the mining village. Close to the river made for lovely pictures. Scenic valley. Martin, the train driver and who showed us around was utterly lovely and deserves a mention as does the Ship Inn - lovely food and great service from the team!

Disliked: Lots. No cold water stands for fresh water, designated camping site was under 2ft of long grass so we were given a choice of 2 places to pitch.. but ended up choosing to pitch near the “amenities”……. The toilet block was awful, one toilet was completely obstructed as it was being used as a store room. The trough like sink was filthy and had no hot water but that didn’t matter as we couldn’t use it anyway! See photos. There was lights hanging over the toilet doors so had to move them before being able to have privacy, there was also a job lot of bamboo in there !? The showers were old stone outbuildings that had been converted but first we had to locate the boiler to enable hot water! Once sorted, we tried.. and failed to find some fresh water .. just as well we had bottled. In the pictures they show camping around the quay, we were the only people here and that wasn’t an option and to be fair it was too far away from the toilet facilities so would only suite campers with your own set up. Staying there for £40 per night is NOT worth the view! I’ve stayed in better for cheaper.

Local attractions

The Tamar Valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and as such has oodles of woodlands, valleys and watery vistas to discover. If you want to check out every twist and turn of the Tamar on a self-powered paddle, head to the nearby village of Calstock (15 minutes' drive) and hire a canoe or kayak. Fans of long walks will want to dash off to nearby Dartmoor (15 minutes) for hikes across open country and the chance to meet semi-wild ponies. A stranger to these parts? Head 10 minutes down the road to the visitor centre in Tavistock to get your bearings. For those who like their landscapes less rugged, this part of the world has a brill bunch of well-tended National Trust properties, including Buckland Abbey (15 minutes), Cotehele House (20 minutes) and Saltram Park (40 minutes). Plymouth (35 minutes) makes another top choice for a family-friendly day trip. Head down here for great sea views at Hoe Park, marine adventures at the National Marine Aquarium or saltwater swims free of sand and seaweed at Tinside Lido. If traveling with tots who need to let off some steam, check out Treasure Island activity park in the city centre for miniature golf, trampolines and digger rides galore.
