  • Eco-friendly site by a woodland five minutes from Hatherleigh
  • Okehampton 15 minutes' drive away; Bude 35 minutes
  • Outdoor skills workshops and tree planting to offset carbon
With so many top rural scents out there it's a pretty tough call, but there's possibly nothing better than the smell of a woodland as the dew settles in the morning/after the rain/on a balmy summer's eve… At Emerald Camping, a tree-lined site in the very centre of Devon, you can experience all that while adding to the fab local foliage by planting a tree of your own, perhaps to offset carbon used on the way to and from the site. This lush forest setting also has access to the river Lew, where you can skim stones, fish for passing trout or keep an eye out for fleeting kingfishers. The water is a few steps from the main site, where there are toilets, showers and handy amenities for self-catered stays that include a microwave and kettle. This groovy mix of habitats is run by folks who are keen on all things environmental, so you should see plenty of inspiring examples of upcycling and seasonal produce while staying here. The site adds a number of eco workshops into the mix throughout the year for those curious about making bug hotels or mastering other goodly green techniques. Emerald Camping is a five-minute drive from Hatherleigh, a tiny market town with a small supermarket, fish and chip shop and pub.

Local attractions

No luck with the trout in the river? Boost your chances of landing a cracking catch by heading to Legge Farm (10 minutes' drive), a friendly coarse fishing park with five well-stocked lakes. Other travellers in your gang not so keen on your rod and tackle chat? Try Meldon Reservoir (20 minutes), a calm spot where you can cast your line in peace and let the others get on with nature-packed lakeside strolls. Okehampton (15 minutes), meanwhile, marks the gateway to Dartmoor National Park and is home to a range of shops, cafés, pretty parks and a Norman castle. Moseying around town can be followed up with a hike up nearby hills, which range from the relatively accessible Rowtor (30 minutes) to the high and blustery peak of Black Tor (40 minutes). Both sides of the Devon coast are also within range at Emerald Camping (just another reason why this site is such a gem). The sandy strands of Bude (35 minutes) have rockpools that are likely to prove popular with the nippers, while the bigger city of Plymouth (an hour) is home to a saltwater lido, the Royal Citadel fortress and National Marine Aquarium.
