  • Wild camping experience near Dunsford in Dartmoor National Park
  • A 15-minute drive to Haldon Forest Park; 20 minutes to Exeter
  • Pick-your-own pitch site with river access for fishing and swims
The wild landscapes of Dartmoor make it a fabulous area for wild camping – but if you’d like to have that feeling of freedom coupled with toilet access, then The Old Barn Campsite is a great place to find it. This back to basics spot in Dunsford, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, makes a fine choice for those who’d like to explore the national park but have a guaranteed camping spot to come back to at the end of the day (and a spot you can choose for yourself, as it's a pick-your-own pitch setup here). Toilets and fresh water are provided to make the camping experience more comfortable, but please note that there are no showers on site. One very handy feature here is direct access to the River Teign – and that means that, instead of a shower, you can simply take a dip in the fresh water if you need to cool off and freshen up. Guests are allowed to fish from the banks here too, so bring your rod along if you’d like to have a go. And of course, the river bank makes a lovely place just to sit down and take in your natural surroundings or set up a little picnic. All is very welcoming on site here, so dogs and kids can join you on Devon holidays filled with all sorts of outdoor activities, including walks among the Dartmoor ponies and sheep. There are several country inns nearby to keep everyone fed, or you can set up a barbecue if you prefer.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Very minimalistic and really appreciated feeling grounded in nature because of it. The river was lovely too and very refreshing for a dip! Public footpath into Dunsford is well maintained and the local pub had a fantastic atmosphere with good hearty portions of food.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: One of our favourite places, look forward to it opening every year in August, excellent if you love wild camping, massive field so plenty of room an very flat, beautiful river you can go swimming or paddle boarding in, couple of Porto loos & a water tap, that's all you need! Also dog friendly, plenty of room for them to run around...

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Field was nice and flat with the grass kept nice and short and there was plenty of space. Even though it was busy when we first arrived it wasn't too crowded.

Disliked: Toilet was just a portaloo and wasn't emptied over the 3 nights we stayed. It was a bit smelly at times and not particularly nice. No chemical waste disposal point either so couldnt use our own loo. We did like the site, but felt it was very expensive for somewhere with no facilities other than a smelly toilet.
