  • No-frills wild camping on a Devon smallholding a mile from the sea
  • Walking distance from two beaches and the South West Coast Path
  • Eco-friendly composting loos with a view; estuary walk close by
Bay View Meadow has no frills, just reels of wildlife and peace. At this site, you’ll be planting down in a wild meadow, part of a smallholding, that's 40 minutes’ walk from two beaches and within walking distance of the river Avon for water-filled scenery. You’ll be sharing your new abode with butterflies, abundant birdlife (including birds of prey overhead) and the occasional honey bee (who live in the hives far away from the pitches). Other welcome visitors include the stars at night (there are rather clear nights with the Milky Way sometimes visible), sublime sunsets and small bats that skim the hedgerows at dusk. In terms of facilities, you’ll have use of an eco-friendly composting toilet, made mostly from recycled materials and off-cuts. On a raised position, it really is a loo with a view – completely waterless too and friendly to the environment, as it turns waste into usable compost that the site will use to fertilise the flower beds and trees. The site also has access to drinking water and to a cold water washing-up point. On your way in, you may want to say hello to the site’s Kunekune pigs or to the assortment of chickens. However, you may also be in a rush to get to the beach too, as Challaborugh Bay beach is rather splendid, accessible by a narrow, sometimes busy road (driving is advised or there is a walking route through Bigbury that has minimal contact with roads), or Bigbury beach, accessible by a public footpath (some sections of the route are along the road).

Liked: Nice view, compost loo was very clean, running water. Very much enjoyed our stay, and will definitely be returning. Just what is needed, when you’re needing a break from everyday life.
