  • Camping pods in a green glade on a working farm in Dartmoor
  • A 25-minute drive to Tavistock market town and 30 to Ashburton
  • Walks on and straight from the site; Dartmeet a 20-minute stroll away
Wander over to – and around, away from and through – this working farm in the western section of Dartmoor National Park. Paths to ply include a biodiversity walk on site to spot local wildlife; the Tin Mine trail for investigating the old 19th-century bits and bobs lying around the grounds, and the 20-minute roam to nearby Dartmeet (where the East Dart and West Dart rivers join up beside the ancient clapper bridge) 20 minutes away. Places like Pew Tor (25 minutes) are also worth strolling – or pedalling – to for moorland views from a scenic summit, while refreshing dips can be taken over in Tavistock (also 25 minutes) at the indoor pool. Also here in this birthplace of Sir Francis Drake is the Pannier Market, a shopping space that’s thrived since the early 12th century. Back on base, the pods sleep up to four adults on two bunks and two foldaway beds, with outdoor space for supping tea with a view in the mornings, and a firepit for evenings spent in the open air by night.

Local attractions

Dartmoor’s top for trekking but it also has more to take up a traveller’s time, from wild swimming in Sharrah Pool on the River Dart to horse riding, climbing and canyoning. To tour the towns and manors in this countryfied area, try the National Trust’s Castle Drogo (40 minutes away) for lush gardens (and even lusher views over Teign Gorge). Or amble to Ashburton (30 minutes) for cute churches and pub lunching in former coaching houses. Speaking of gorges, the deepest one in the south west is at Lydford (35 minutes), and around the same distance away are Morwellham Quay for a Victorian museum in a historic village with a port, copper mine and railway as well as the Tamar Trails Centre so the kids can hike, bike and canoe while mums and dads take a break in the coffee shop. The 500-metre downhill mountain biking Gawton Gravity Hub trail’s around here for thrillseekers, just along from Maddacleave Wood (30 minutes from the park) if leisurely lopes through the trees appeal a little more than throwing yourself down a hill...
